Since my local church is St. Philomena, I picked up a St. Philomena cord from the Rose Scapular Company. The card that came with it was a reprint of some older card, as it mentioned an indulgence of 100 days. There is suppose to be a blessing and investure from a Priest, and one recites a one-sentence prayer every day.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the wording on the card dates from before St. Philomena’s removal from the calendar. :o

Yesterday I received a second, longer cord from the Saint Philomena Foundation. It stated that the cord had already been blessed, and no ceremony was required in conferring. No mention was made of actual privilages and indulgences:(

Likewise, a much longer prayer was suggested for the daily wearing of the cord. I find I actually prefer the longer, newer prayer.
So I will wear the cord anyhow, as a way of dedication, indulgences or not, privilages or not. If any indulgences are available they would go to the Church Suffering, not me, due to my Act Of Charity.👍

Rose Scapular Company also sells cords of St. Joseph and St. Francis. Are any of these cords still effective as far as privilages and indulgences go, or have they also fallen by the wayside?

All old specific indulgences were taken away by the new Enchiridion (a shame, I think)…

But there is still a grant for:
  1. Use of Articles of Devotion (Obiectorum pietatis usus)
The faithful, who devoutly use an article of devotion (crucifix or cross, rosary. scapular or medal) properly blessed by any priest, obtain a partial indulgence.
But if the article of devotion has been blessed by the Sovereign Pontiff or by any Bishop, the faithful, using it, can also gain a plenary indulgence on the feast of the Holy Apostles, Peter and Paul, provided they also make a profession of faith according to any legitimate formula.
The above grant is taken from Norm 17 of the [1967] Apostolic Constitution The Doctrine of Indulgences. Also Norm 19 of the Enchiridion [1968]
Footnote : In order to bless an article or devotion properly the priest uses the prescribed fromula, if there is any; otherwise, he makes a simple sign of the cross toward the article of devotion, laudably adding the words: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. In practice, a formula is to be used in the public blessing of scapulars, while a sign of the cross suffices for other cases.
Since the new book of blessings doesn’t contain any particular prescribed blessing for cincture cords…the old investiture ceremony would be fine. Or just a simple sign of the cross, apparently.

For scapulars, I like to go to a tridentine priest. Because the new formular isn’t that great (there is one general one for all scapulars instead of individual ones for the different scapulars) and yet a new priest using the old formula is canonically questionable. But a tridentine priest can use the old Rituale…so it’s better.
