Thanks to all for posting! This forum is stimulating and enriching as we fellow Catholics exchange our divers viewpoints.

I agree more with dtmccameron: It is a gift! A gift is given with / without asking.
I don’t think this is “tempting the Lord” in any way!

This is my opinion…
I posted this question to serve as a window into each individual’s level of trust in Our Father! Jesus says we have to become like little children to enter the kingdom of Heaven. As we can see, some of us think like adults when we feel we are “not worthy” to ask for a share in our Savior’s wounds. OK. But then again, does that make us “worthy” to receive any and/or all other gifts that He has chosen to bestow upon us, His sons and daughters? Does that make us “worthy” to receive His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity each and every time we communicate?

Just to mention a couple of examples from history…
Issac-Jacob (took the place of Esau for his father’s blessing)
Elias-Elesius (he asked for Elias power)

To those who are parents: Does your child have any inhibitions in asking you for something/anything, despite the “value” of that requested? Whether is harmful or hurtful to him and/or others? Whether he deserves it or not? Whether he is responsible or not?

He approaches his parent in a candid and trusting manner while relying on his parent’s decision knowing it will be carried thru having the best interest at heart.

You may give that which he has asked for…
  1. He is happy
  2. You are happy
  3. He needs it
  4. He wants it
  5. It is useful to him
  6. #5 and others
  7. #5, 6 and environment
  8. It was a sacrifice on your part
  9. It was a reward…
Do we as adults, hesitate in asking God for life, health, peace… the Holy Spirit for His gifts, the Mother for all and sundry, foster Father; St. Joseph, all other Saints and Angels?
No.

Apart from praising, thanking and interceding, do we see ourselves asking, asking, asking and asking?
Yes! We also “ask” that HIS WILL BE DONE!
Why?
Simply because He is the Giver! He is our Father! He can! He is! He does!

O Lord I am not worthy that You should come to me, but say the word Lord, say the word and my soul shall be healed!

Now looking at the wretched, undeserveding, unworthy self, my way of understanding when my petitions are answered…
  1. God grants my petition because of Himself (Father and child scenario) thereby deepens my trust in Him
  2. God grants my petition, because of the intercessor (Mother and child scenario)
  3. God grants my petition to glorify Himself (thru His creation, Angels, Saints)
  4. God grants my petition because He is Mercy (my salvation)
He knows our every thought, need, but yet desires humility to put to use His generosity… to give you something you do NOT deserve…

Mary, our Sorrowful Mother, endured every Friday on her virginal body, invisibly the entire Way of the Cross, until she passed from here to Her empyrean throne in Heaven.
(a/c to “Mystical City of God” by Ven. Mary of Agreda)

St. Paul was among the very first to bear the wounds of Christ on his body (a/c to his writings in the Bible)

There are only a few (62 known) saints/blessed that bear the stigmata and we have more saints/blessed without the stigmata.

Again in my opinion, having the stigmata DOES NOT make one holy or holier that the others. Each of us has our own place in His Sacred Heart. Humility and Love is the path trod to holiness and since our soul takes on the image of Christ or the beast, I feel it is okay to ask Jesus for a share in His passion, in order to resemble Him more intimately!

Be blessed in Jesus name!

no. i mhave all i can do just being little me! but i know it is powerfull way to pray thru wounds of JESUS. a carmelite nun told me taht many years ago and it dous bring miracles thru jesus vwounds to our needs. lilies

There has been a discussion of stigmata elsewhere.

The Church attributes NO doctrinal or spiritual significane to stigmata in and of themselves.

This is not even MENTIONED in the Cathechism of the Catholic Church.

What should that tell you?

Next, most us even complain about our usual daily crosses and such.

Why should God give us something extraordinary?

My knowledge of stigmata is limited. I know of a few saints, to whom it was granted. I would venture to say… that it is a Gift from Jesus, Our Lord.

For myself, I would never be so bold as to ask Him for so great a privilege. This is His prerogative… to grant to whomever He chooses. Besides, I know my own weakness, so I have no desire for the stigmata. :nope: “To whom much is given, much is expected”.

I pray only… that He will grant me the courage and strength to bear the particular cross He has chosen for me to carry through life.

God bless.

I heard that both St. Francis of Assisi and St. Padre Pio received it because they prayed at the foot of the Cross asking for it. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is true? ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Our holy father Francis and Saint Pio prayed to be conformed to Christ in all things. St. Bonaventure says of St. Francis that he had conformed to Christ in all virtues and that the Lord bestowed on him the stigmata to confirm the intimacy and the union of Francis’ human soul with Christ’s passion. Neither friar prayed for the stigmata.

Fraternally,

I am so so glad I am not the only one that asked themselves this question. Right now I would like to take his wounds INVISIBLE for one to take away suffering from my friend and family. Also to wash away the stains of sin on my soul. I am not worthy of his stigmata nor am I holy enough nor patient enough.

No, I definitely do not want to receive the stigmata. It looks like it hurts a great deal. Frankly, I’m a big baby about that kind of stuff. However, if God chose to bestow it on me (and, honestly, I cannot even imagine that He would), I would try to accept it with grace and unite my sufferings with Christ’s wounds. The grace that is received, not just by those who suffer with Christ, but by the whole world, is tremendous. What blessings we receive from those who suffer in a saintly way!

Seeing as how much I complain about the little stuff though, I don’t think He’ll be gracing me with the stigmata any time soon

i believe once we see how good the heart of our father in heaven is we only want to br pleasing to him so the stigmata is not important just try to be like the attributes of jesus MEEK, FORGIVING,KIND. LILIES
