Do stonings still occur in orthodox Judaism? Where it doesn’t occur, how is that explained within the religion?

Stoneing requires a certain legal authority which isn’t present for Orthodox Jews anywhere in the world.

Given some recent events in Israel over a little girl’s clothes in an Orthodox neighborhood, I’m sure there are some who would love to bring it back.

It was pretty hard to get yourself executed even in biblical times - the standard of proof required was extremely high. Just taking the Torah as a guide to Jewish Law is a bit like taking the American Constitution and saying that it’s the whole of US Law, Torah is the context but there’s the whole of what is known as Oral Torah, the huge tradition of argument and interpretation to be taken into account as well.

This is from My Jewish Learning which is a good site for checking on Jewish teaching on all sorts of things.

I don’t think you understand the difference between divine law and the juridical law (a civil and criminal code of law governing the Jews). Not everything in the bible is divine law. Remember in addition to being a religion, the Hebrew people also formed a nation with laws regulating behavior, commerce, etc.

The modern state of Israel has a penal code appropriate for current times. Judaism as a religion does not have civil laws.

Really? That’s interesting! I’m discussing capital punishment on another thread and lots of OT examples are being used.
