During the Prayer of Consecration. When the priest elevates the Host, and then the Cup, I ususallly just pray to myself, “My Lord and my God!”

Yesterday, I heard someone behind me murmuring what seemed to be a much longer prayer during these periods. Is there a “formulated” prayer that I should be offering? There’s not enough time to offer the standard “Prayer before Communion.”

Your thoughts?

There is no formulated prayer for the elevation. Maybe what you heard was the prayer that the angel taught the children at Fatima, “My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You.”

I was wondering the same thing…thanks for asking. And, thanks for the response,Moira. God Bless Annunciata:)

"My Lord and My God" profound words spoken by St Thomas when he recongnised the Risen Christ before him. What beautiful words of faith and recognition.:gopray:

It is right, however, for the people to look at the Host; Pope St. Pius X granted a special indulgence at the elevation for those who bow their head or say the prayer, “My Lord and My God.” as set out below:
***"**Aspiration at the Elevation of the Sacred Host: My Lord and My God! The faithful who, at the elevation of the Sacred Host during Mass or when It is solemnly exposed, recite this ejaculation with faith, piety and love, are granted an indulgence of 7 years." – S.P. Ap., June 21. 1927 and Jan. 26, 1937. Ibid, p. 316 *

I too say these words at the elevation of the Host and I have made it a habit of adding the Fatima prayer as above for the elevation of both Sacred Host and the Sacred Chalice.

At the elevation of the chalice I always use the prayer given to St. Faustina by Jesus “Oh blood and water that flowed from the heart of Christ as a fount on Mercy for us, I trust in you.”

So be very proud that the Holy Spirit has directed you to use these profound words at this most solemn moment of the Holy Mass.

Gos Bless.

Nothing is specified in the Order of the Mass. I pray the words of St. Francis, “My Lord, My God and My All”

fergal, there is no longer a specified time given for partial indulgences… there are only partial and plenary indulgences … but we’ll take whatever the Lord is merciful to give us… less time in purgatory is always a good thing:D 👍

My favorites:

At the Consecration

When the Priest Offers the Host

Lord, place upon the platen my heart, the hearts of all those near and dear to me especially the hearts of my relatives; the hearts of all those for whom I have promised to pray; the hearts of all those whom I may have injured; the hearts of all the agonizing; the hearts of all who will die this week.

Jesus when You change the bread into Your Body, change our hearts into hearts pleasing to You.

*Create in me a clean heart, O God;
Let me be like You in all my ways.
*My Lord and my God.

When the Priest Offers the Chalice

Lord, place within the chalice the souls of all the faithful departed especially my relatives and all for whom I should pray; the souls of those for whom I may have forgotten to pray; the souls most devoted to the Precious Blood; the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Virgin; the souls of the most abandoned. Jesus when You change the wine into Your Precious Blood, bring these poor souls from their place of suffering into eternal happiness.

Mother of Sorrows! Mother of Christ! You had influence with your Divine Son when on earth, you have the same influence now in Heaven, pray for me, obtain from your Divine Son my request, if it be His holy will. – Amen.

Be mindful O Lord, of Your creatures whom
You have redeemed by Your most precious blood.

When I was a child preparing for First Holy Communion, we were taught to say,
“My Lord and my God” at the elevation of the Host,
and “My God and my All” at the elevation of the Chalice.

At the elevation of the Host, I pray: "My Lord & My God

At the elevation of the chalice, I pray: “Precious Blood of Jesus, pour forth thy infinite ocean of mercy upon us poor sinners and the poor souls in purgatory!”

…Not a dumb question! 👍

Of course!

I was just pointing out how highly these few words and their use have always been esteemed by the Church. I was merely stating that their useage was indulgenced and put in an antiquated quote to back up my statement!!

No harm to remind us though!!

Thanks!

While one should use this as a particular time for adoration of the Host, there is neither a set prayer that one ought to pray not does one need to pray any particular mental/words prayer at all. It is entirely a matter of personal devotion which can vary from person to person.

At the elevation of the host I say under my breath “My Lord and my God”. At the elevation of the chalice I say “Remember your servant, Lord and wash away my sins with Your precious blood”. Which now that I see it is most likely my version of the below (probably because I couldn’t remember it right and added my own words–but hey, I like it 🙂 )

this is what I was taught, I have been doing it since I made my first communion in 1957, but since the liturgy police clamped down on the practice following V2 I have been doing it silently, but it seems to be enjoying a revival because it is spoken aloud by many people in several parishes here, and our visiting priest (from Africa) says this quite audibly as he genuflects.

I was told that we should offer up our prayers during the Consecration because God will refuse nothing when it is presented with the Body & Blood of His Son.

I usually asked to be saved from the fires of hell.

I forgot to add that I always say “My Lord & My God” at the elevation…but always wondered what other were saying…
