Saint Arsenius lived a life amid great luxury in the court of the Roman emperor, but then, heeding the voice of God calling on him to save his soul, went off to the desert of Egypt to live a life of a monk in great austerity and want. Many striking stories have been passed down about him, Christians finding in them a spiritual treasure.
 
From this, it is clear to me that Saint Arsenius sought God above all else:
Abba Mark said to Abba Arsenius, ‘Why do you avoid us?’ The old man said to him, ‘God knows that I love you, but I cannot live with God and with men. The thousands and ten thousands of the heavenly hosts have but one will, while men have many. So I cannot leave God to be with men.’
