Hello all,
As a recent convert from Protestantism, I found the idea of offering up your pain for the conversion of sinners to be interesting. As a Protestant this idea was completely foreign. I didn’t see any real purpose in pain, other than that it’s simply an effect of the fall. But as a Catholic I now understand that suffering, pain, fasting, etc serves a purpose-- not that we should seek out pain, but that it can be used to bring conversion.
I also heard a homily that discussed a few conversions that occurred through Bishop Fulton Sheen. He offered mass daily for a distant relative of his who was very anti-Catholic, and after 6 months she converted.
I’m not sure how many here are big Michael Voris fans, but I know he had a similar story. He was a self-described heathen. His mother died of cancer and was offering up her pain for his conversion, and he ended up having a radical conversion.
I personally think I MAY have had some smaller similar experiences. I live in NYC and my job is very diverse. I have two particular friends there, one from Korea and one from Japan, and I decided to offer my prayers, fasting, and pain for them at a particular time. It didn’t take very long and the Japanese friend asked me if I could get him a Bible-- three times. The Korean friend kept asking me questions and really seemed open to it, and commented that “you may end up converting me!”
Whether that was God working through me or just happenstance, who knows? Neither have fully converted, but I found this very interesting. I’ve known them for years and both of these situations happened at the time I began offering prayers and offering up pain and fasting for them.
Has anyone had any similar experiences?
What about offering masses? Has anyone offered masses for someone they know and pray for conversion? I’ve imagined offering many masses for a few particular people and praying that God converts them. (My aunt, a former Catholic who converted to Judaism recently; and my brother-in-law, who is a homosexual agnostic-deist).
