I don’t go to this parish every week but whenever I do I notice a middle aged couple with their teenage/young adult daughter. The daughter is obviously intellectually disabled, autism or something similar. I’m not sure what.
At any rate, the girl makes constant high pitched screeches during the whole Mass. And the Mother will take her out at least once during that time.
My first reaction was annoyance to be honest. “My” peaceful time was disturbed. But gradually I see the worn out faces of the parents. If anyone has a cross to bear it is them. What must it be like to care for their daughter all the time? The level of patience required.
What I was witnessing was real faith being really tested. Those parents are the benchmark. They have my total respect.

We have a homeschooling family have the same scenario. Father always takes time to bless her after giving her communion. They are a verty sweet family, and the people at daily Mass are very kind to them.

That is exactly what my best friend, a priest, said about a similar case here.

Just imagine if they have four. We had a couple whose four children all born intellectually disabled, hyperactive and blind. I suppose it is their love, as parents, that makes them so very patient and loving towards them (their children). Two of the children only managed to reach adolescent before they suffered medical complication adn died. The remaining two do not fare too well but to see the optimistic outlook of the parents, it is really humbling and boggles the mind.
