"One night in the dead of winter they heard a noise in the house. When one of the sisters went to the entrance to see what it was, she saw a masked man. He seized her, held a large knife to her throat and yelled, “Give me all your dollars!”
She answered, “We don’t have any!”
“Roubles, then!” demanded the burglar.
“We don’t have any roubles in the house, either.”
Finally the man said, “Then pack up something for me to eat!”
So the sisters packed spaghetti, jam and whatever they happened to have in the kitchen for him to take with him. They thoughtfully included also salt and utensils. As soon as everything was packed, the man grabbed the bundle of food out of the Sister’s hand and ran out of the way he had come in. He had broken through the main door and walked through the chapel to the Sisters’ residence. Now, running out through the chapel again, he suddenly turned and said, ““Your God will never forgive me!”
A Sister replied,“Yes, he will, if you ask Him for forgiveness.” The man turned to leave and said to the Sisters, who were who were shivering in the cold, “You must close the door behind me.”
But he had damaged the door while breaking in and it would not close. When saw the Sisters’ helplessness, he had them bring a hammer and began to mend the door. As soon as it was mended, he took his package and ran away.
