I had to laugh while sitting at Mass the other day. Not out loud, of course, as I have no wish to be the center of attention. But following the Adoration, and sitting quietly and admiring some new artwork which has been installed over the chancel, I watched a woman several rows in front of me fuss and worry her hair to the point I thought she might start shampooing it. Finally a ponytail of some sort seemed to have been decided on and I watched as the hair was carefully coiled and tucked and knotted up on top of the head. I smiled because I thought how ridiculous it had been that I became both distracted and enthralled with this side show. When she stood up to arrange something on the seat, I realized it wasn’t a woman at all but a heavily bearded man.

Now, I’ve always had longer hair myself, perhaps even long enough to make a pony tail out of at times. But I’d never seen a man make such a fuss over their hair before. It just struck me as highly amusing.

He likely has some kind of a nervous habit. I have seen several young people, male and female, incessantly mess with their hair at the Newman Center Mass. I’m not that easily distracted during Mass, but in both these cases the hair twiddling and fiddling went on for many minutes and was rather extreme, and when you’re sitting right behind such a person it’s hard not to see it. I actually considered switching seats in one case because it was very distracting. Since then I have happened to observe one of the hair-twiddlers on other occasions around the Center, engaging in behaviors that makes me think they have a mild psychological disorder, so they probably can’t help their hair twiddling or don’t realize they’re acting oddly.

I will be glad when the “man-bun” drops out of style because I think it is even dopier looking than the “Mr. Sensitive Ponytails” of the 90s, but I am from a different era.

I have long-ish hair (not by ancient standards, they’d consider my hair medium length, just pointing that out). I have some friends that play with their hair whey get nervous (though, they actually are women).
