Can a person be a good Catholic while playing games which aren’t really violent, these are strategy games, there is nothing sexual or violent really, it’s like in the real world in different times and you build up your empire and control your economy and engage in diplomacy. An answer from a Catholic point of view shall be welcome. 🙂

Most people aren’t going to see any problem at all with games like Civilization. I’m not even really sure why you feel the need to ask about them. Is something making you wonder about them? :ehh:

I for one really like strategy games, although I’m not very good at them. 😛

There is nothing wrong with strategy games, provided that there is not bad content in it or some other reason for concern.

Why are asking? Did someone tell you it is a sin?

Not sure why you think that wouldn’t be OK?

Sounds almost like bridge. 😛

I was thinking of chess.

Guy355, I am not familiar with the games, but they sounds like good clean fun that can also exercise your mind and develop skills that would benefit you in other areas of life.

Don’t forget the ultimate purpose, to take over the world. The game of world domination: risk. I have always liked strategy games like risk, and civilization. ‘The Ukraine is weak.’

for the OP’s scruples, he could play Axis & Allies, control the german army, and opt not to invade Russia.

I’ve never played that.

We used to play risk with my uncle once in a while, and we would joke that he was playing ‘the game of world peace’ (rather than ‘the game of world domination’), because he would stack all his men on one country every turn and never attack anyone.

so he’s basically playing Switzerland. probably making out like a bandit supplying arms and banking services to belligerents.

Or, you could play BattleTech (a game of mecha combat in the 31st Century) and play asComStar. You want to wield ultimate power? They may have regiments of big stompy robots*, but you have something even better – almost complete control over the galaxy’s communications systems. Anyone gets outta line in a way you don’t like and… “oh, I’m sorry, did I knock your part of the grid out? Well, if you want to get HBO, and more importantly be able to communicate with your neo-feudal vassals again, maybe you wanna toe the line, mmmkay?” 😃
  • To be fair, ComStar also has big, stompy robots, but at least till 3050, they liked keeping those a secret for a “last resort” trump.

If your answers to your violent games question were generally neutral, what makes you think this one would come out with a thumbs down?

My favorite kind of games, when I had the time to play, were RTS.
