I know that the priest does this to himself 3 times during the Confiteor in the TLM, and I saw one woman doing it during the Confiteor at an NO Mass (in a different Parish).

Curious about its prevalence, hence the poll!

i did it at home when i said it, and i see our priest do it as well. i don’t look at other parishioners to see what they are doing as i keep my full attention on the Mass and not the people. i suppose there are people who do do it, only i haven’t seen anyone other than the priest do it.

I always do it and sometimes I do get some strange looks from the rest of the people around me.

My pastor sometimes tells us, “I’d like to remind you that, as Catholics, we strike our breasts three times during the confiteor.” I follow this practice.

Do you strike your breast 3x? If so, at what point? In the TLM version, I know the priest does it when he says “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault”…but when during the shortened version?

:o Confiteor, is this the prayer at the beginning of Mass were we say, “I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers & sisters…” I’m not sure because I call that the Penitential Rite.

Anyhoo, we don’t say it. I’ve made note that we have said it twice since around Easter, and each time it was because a visiting priest was leading the Mass. I didn’t notice if anyone did strike their breast.

Yep - that’s the one. 🙂

The Confiteor is so named because it is the first word of the Penitential Rite. Confiteor=I confess.

The text of the confiteor in Latin for the Novus Ordo is a little different than the Tridentine one:

Confiteor Deo omnipotens et vobis, fratres, quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, opere et omissione: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, omnes Angelos et Sanctos, et vos, fratres, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.

The old confiteor reads:

Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatæ Mariæ semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Joanni Baptistæ, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et tibi, Pater: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo et opere: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaalem Archangelum, beatum Joannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et te, Pater, orare pro me ad Dóminum Deum nostrum.

I attend the NO - if the Confiteor is said, I strike my breast once at ‘through my own fault’. If the ‘Lord have mercy’ is said or sung without the Confiteor I will do it three times, one each time I say ‘Lord/Christ have mercy’. I don’t notice very many others doing the same, but then I don’t pay that much attention to other people around me anyways.

Hmm…I do my Confiteor with my eyes closed in prayer and dont notice what people do around me. Single strike to the brest.

I’ve never seen anyone strike their breast during the Confiteor. I’ve seen it done during the consecration, though.

I do it during the Confiteor and at a couple other times during the mass. As far as I know though I, and our visiting African priest are the only ones who do this. (Our visiting priest is fantastic btw!)

The Confiteor current N.O. version in Latin… I am sure it still reads “mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa”.

When I attend the N.O. Mass at my hometown parish Fr. Malcolm and others led by him still strike their breast thrice at that time.
