Please forgive me if my question seems redundant. While I see several posts regarding Bible Study Guide recommendations, I’m looking for something rather specific, if it exists.

I helped organize an Advent discussion group at a local nursing home, which used the Sunday by Sunday series. Much of the content of this series seemed rather “new age” and even inappropriate. (Mary was once referred to as “unwed mom”???)

We’d like to start up the group again in Lent, but I’d really like to find a more appropriate guide. Using the Sunday liturgy readings was a nice framework, but not mandatory, if the content is Lent-related. We’re self-directed (no scripture experts) so the guide should teach us something as well as stimulate discussion. I’m not even sure how to define “age-appropriate” for our group, but a traditional approach would be better than modern. Occasionally we are joined by Protestants, and even once by someone Jewish (what a delight!) but I’d prefer a Catholic resource.

Thanks for all suggestions!

I have a couple of suggestions for you.
  1. You could all watch Mel Gibson’s “The Passion” and do the Bible study provided free on Catholic Exchange. It is found here:
    passion.catholicexchange.com/
  2. You could pick one of the New Testament and study it over a period of several weeks. The Ignatius Study Bibles are excellent, with orthodox and interesting notes, and about a dozen questions for discussion on each chapter in the back. They are very inexpensive too, about $10 a booklet.

I’d recommend John’s Gospel or the Book of Romans.
  3. You can use the liturgical Bible study I post every week on my web page that goes over the Sunday readings. They are usually posted on the Wednesday evening previous to the Sunday that is being covered. For more information about these and other studies, please visit my web page linked below.
