Does anyone know of any studies done on the thought processes, philosophy or discernment of conversions from one Christian denomination or sect to another?

There seems to be similar underlying themes of those converting either from or to certain religions. Has anybody else sensed this?

Peace to all!!!

There’s so many reasons why one converts. I doubt there is a theme. Perhaps there are general categories we can come up and place them into those buckets. But conversions are varied across the board, and for many reasons. I would even dare say that each story is unique in itself, given that it is the product of the experiences of that person.

I’m not an expert, but I think the majority of people who convert or revert to Catholicism do so to receive God’s grace thru the Sacraments and have come to discover that the Catholic Church is the visible church that Jesus established and still teaches the authentic teachings that Christ Himselft taught.

I think it would be very interesting to see what would fall into those buckets. Just a thought…

I would tend to agree, sense I am Catholic, but it would be interesting to see a group study showing the differences in the discernment process or motivations from those coming into vs. out of say, Catholicism or any other religion/sect.

Peace!!!

There’s many reasons, some are petty, some are profound. As one who recently converted, I can say that it is really an experience and that it is hard to compare one person’s experience with another. Even if I talk to another person who converted from Catholicism to Orthodoxy, we’d have different issues, different things we were looking for, different reasons. My parish is like 80% converts, yet we all have different reasons for being there.
