Hi,

What do you think about studying in adoration?

Does it make any difference if it’s studying theology (e.g. reading encyclicals, moral theology books that have to be read for class) as opposed to studying, say, history/language?

I’m not talking about using designated prayer time for study. Prayer would be done outside of this studying as per normal. I’m talking about having to study and instead of studying in the library, studying in front of Jesus instead. Would he prefer that we were there even if our full attention was not given to him?

I remember that St Therese said that she felt guilty for falling asleep in adoration on occasion but that Jesus reassured her that he didn’t mind, he used the example of a father who is quite happy for his little daughter to fall asleep on his lap. This suggests that Jesus may be ok with our full attention not being focused on him in adoration although I do see a distinction between sleeping and studying, sleeping is (usually!) unintentional, studying would be intentional.

What do you think?

I like it and have done it before. When I lived at the Catholic Student Center alone and would get paranoid (of the boogie man I guess), I would go in the adoration chapel to sleep.

I’m curious to see what others have to say about it. Perhaps some will think it’s irreverent, but why not seek the comfort and peace of Jesus’ presence at all times?

I have read Catholic publications, books, etc while at Adoration. I feel that this is time spent with Jesus, and like a family member, I am comfortable being in their presence without constantly conversing. Certainly, I would not go there just to read or otherwise be preoccupied, but prayer, meditation, religious reflection and presence are all part of the Adoration experience.

As long as your study time is in addition to dedicated adoration I feel that Jesus wants you to be with Him a lot, even if He has to study with you. 🙂

Pope John Paul the Great always studied before the Blessed Sacrament…
