Hello

I am a secondary school student and I have an examination period coming up. I have a lot of study to do.

Tomorrow is Sunday. I have been to Mass already at the Saturday vigil. Is it morally permissible for me to study around 10 hours tomorrow? I know it seems exuberant, but it may be necessary if I want to get good marks. The only other alternative is staying up very late on school nights.

God Bless.

This question comes up frequently. Studying is not servile work and thus may be freely done on Sunday, provided that you meet your Mass obligation as it sounds like you have done.

Take a break, please. 😂

I’m a student too and my advice is not to study for long time periods. Study for five hours, take an hour long break, then continue.

Of course, you may study! We must do what MUST be done—in other words, anything that can’t be put off without causing us problems or grief.

As far as school goes, you want to do your best in order to be your best, so study as much as you need to do to ace your test. 😇

Although the commandments are commandments, not suggestions, God doesn’t have a checklist like you thought Santa had when you were a ittle tyke. They’re there to help us get to Heaven, but please don’t get bogged down in little stuff. Repeat after me: Don’t sweat the small stuff! 😀😀

It’s morally permissible because your “job” right now is student, and you want to be well prepared for your chosen profession.

However, on a purely secular level, 10 hours is a lot of studying at one time. You can wear yourself out with mental work, just like physical.

If you can work out a different study schedule, where you do some every day, rather than let it pile up, that would be better.

But yeah, I know. Sometimes the work piles up. That happens too

Best of luck :crossed_fingers:t2:

It sounds as if you are having difficulty scheduling out your study time. You might want to take a look at how/where/on what you use your time and how you set up study schedules for each class you are taking.

That is not to say that studying on Sunday is wrong; only to suggest that some of what you are doing on a Sunday should have already been done during the week.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I can’t avoid doing my study today on Sunday. But from now on I will resolve to study for no more than a couple of hours on Sunday so that I can attend Mass on Sunday rather than Saturday evening, have free time and learn more about the treasures of our Church.

It may take doing a lot of study during the week but I think it’s for the best so that my Sunday can be devoted to praising God.
