Can anyone help explain the “subjective nature of work” in JPII’s Laborm Exercens?

catholic-pages.com/documents/laborem_exercens.pdf

Also, how can I actually live this stuff out in a “good ole boy” southern work culture. I really struggle in living out objective truths in workplaces where egos, subjectivity, and apathy for quality of work run rampant.

Okay… this is philosophy talk, where words don’t mean the same as they normally do.

He’s saying that humans aren’t just things that exist (humans “in the objective sense”), but that humans do things, and humans think and feel their own particular thoughts and feelings about the things they do. They are like the subjects of a sentence. That’s being humans “in the subjective sense.”

So people also do work, and think and feel their own thoughts and feelings about the work they do. They aren’t widgets who do work automatically and do it all the same way.

So basically, working is to be considered as part of how you serve God and are a steward for the earth, just like Adam was commanded to take care of the Garden and defend it. You are not a widget; you are God’s trusty steward. And you are here to make life better and do good things, or make good things and do life better. 🙂
