Is it theologically possible to suffer for the redemption of others? Say someone asked God if he/she could suffer for the redemption of another person. Could this be done? I understand this would not equate to atonement, but still the principle of redemptive suffering as long as the “sufferer and sufferee” are alive.

Also, you may want to read JP II’s Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris (On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering) (February 11, 1984)

It goes into a very detailed analysis of the spiritual meaning of suffering.
