Suggestion for confirmation patron saint

I will be confirmed May 31st. Yay! It’s actually about time. A “cradle catholic” who is 40 years old. LOL.

Anyway, I’m a computer scientist. I am a programmer by day, and a programmer by night too! I LOVE technology. I’m looking at this URL:

I’ve looked under “C” for “computer,” and “T” for “Technology.” Interesting that I found “television” but nothing else.

If anything, I’ll pick St. Francis of Assisi since I am named after St. Clare of Assisi.

Anyway, for “technology” or “computers,” any patron saint suggestions?

A joke my dad told me once was that the patron saint of technology was St. John Damascene (say it out loud).

By the way St Clare is the patron saint of television because she was able to “attend” miraculously midnight Christmas mass from her hospital bed in the 1200’s.
i chose Francis Anthony and Benedict for mine back in the dark ages.

I would recommend St. Elizabeth the New Martyred Abbess–but she has always been a favorite of mine.

She was a direct descendant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary (for whom she was named), raised a Lutheran, converted to Orthodoxy, founded the Martha-Mary Convent of Mercy in Moscow, and died as a martyr for Christ.

As she said on the very eve of her reception into the Orthodox Church, “We are all of us Christians, Christ’s children.”

I’ve recently read that it is generally recommended to use one of your baptismal names for the confirmation name, assuming they are Christian names.

I didn’t know this when I confirmed, as I took St. Francis. I made this selection in honor of my grandfather. Not a bad pick really. But, I would have been better off selecting El Matamoro (St. James the Moorslayer).

Our adult confirmation instructor told us to pick saints that we can relate to. Hence why I have chosen St. Francis of Assisi, and I wanted to know who would be the patron saint of computers or technology.

There is a greater reason for that too. My boyfriend (Byzantine Catholic) and I have started a software development company. And really, I promise you, as I code during the day (or night) I assure you, I need the help of MANY SAINTS at times!

LOL! I would suggest that after one does a code review on MY code, one might say a prayer to St. Jude or St. Rita for me.

In the end its your choice. Pick a good name that identifies your positive qualities…You’ll have that name until you die you know. Francis,Isiadore, whomever you choose, choose one that suits you and that you like.

By the way it is your choice I only suggest. Back when i worked RCIA I was asked to co-sponsor an older gentleman. His wife was his main sponsor but, the church doesn’t really like that idea because what if they get divorced? When it came time to pick a name for a saint his wife who is a catholic of Polish extraction came up with Kazimir who was a Polish King and martyr. She described him as “a great saint, her father had that name” I asked Roger whether that was the saint he wanted. Not really but, he ended up stuck with him anyway. Your confirmation name is a saint you look up to and want to be like. They are also a buddy for you in heaven especially when things are tough and that code makes as much sense as the DaVinci code or maybe a David Lynch movie. In the words of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade “chose wisely my son”(or daughter as the case may be).

In any case, it’s great that you’re putting thought into your confirmation patron. When I was confirmed at 14 or so, like all the other boys I didn’t give a thought at all and ended up picking my own middle name.

That turned out to be providential, however - that same name (Anthony) became the most fitting patron for my confirmation and my religious profession - please God I will one day be Fr Anthony, OP.

As for your name, I would suggest looking beyond your profession for ideal qualities - have you read the life of a saint who inspired you in some way by their faith, their charity, their love of Christ, their heroism in persecution? The ancient Roman martyrs have always been a huge inspiration to me, especially the virgin-martyrs like St Agnes (executed at 12 years only old).

Keep thinking about it, we’ll keep praying for you.

Toribus, yes, that is why my other choice is St. Francis of Assisi. I have always been inspired by him, although I have not yet read any works by him.

I know I have atleast a couple of weeks so I’m still looking, and praying.

You’re confusing Pentecost with Ascension, which is traditionally on a Thursday, 10 days or so before Pentecost.
