Don’t know if this is the best place for this, but am in the market for a new bible…considering the Douay-Rheims, New Jerusalem, or NAB. I understand that the Lectionary for Mass uses the NAB version, but have heard that the Douay-Rheims is the best english translation. Any ideas out there?

God Bless all who help,

It totatlly depends on what you are wanting it for.

The NAB is very readable. Since it is not such a literal translation, it is smoother. Accuracy may be exchanged for readablity.

The Douay-Rheims is a translation of a translation, from Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic into Latin, then from Latin into English.

The RSV- Catholic edition is a good, solid, literal translation.

When I became Catholic I bought a NAB study Bible. For one thing, I did not know how much “opinion” was interjected into the notes. If I had, I might have looked around longer. I made my choice for a very practical reason. I wanted a good quality leather Bible, that would last for decades (a couple, anyway). Most of the ones I found were just not durable enough.

All of the church approved bibles have their good points. The readings used in church are NAB. This might be a good choice for you so that you can use the notes to help you with the daily and Sunday Mass readings.

May God bless you as you strive to follow his word.
