My husband and I are the Godparent couple to the seniors in our parish. I’m trying to figure out something to give them for graduation that they could take with them to college but that isn’t too expensive. Something simple that would remind them of their beliefs in an encouraging way. Even if it was just a specific holy card or a print I could buy and laminate. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

What is “not too expensive”? If you can afford a good Catholic study Bible, that is something they could stand to have on their bookshelves. You can get The Screwtape Letters for under ten dollars a copy, if you look around. Teens will often read it because it is both short and very cleverly written.

You could also get them into College Connection for Catholics, which is a project in which the Serra Club is arranging to get the contact information for Catholic college students to the Catholic Campus ministry on their campuses. This takes more effort than money: serraus.org/serrausa/serra_connect.htm.

There are about six of them, so not more than $15 maybe? Will definitely look into the link!!

O.K. - hopefully this doesn’t seem too old fashioned (but we do have 8 God Children - about to have one more Christened so I’m always thinking about gifts as we always have a birthday or Christmas or Confirmation just around the corner! That’s a lot of gifts!) You may even be able to make this if you have a pretty nice printer - and it may be something kind of cool:
what about getting some of the nice paper at office depot or online (ebay has some really cheap) - then at the top put their name with their Confirmation name included and possibly an address - at the very bottom you can put JMJ - like I said kind of old fashioned - my Dad kind of came up with this - he mentioned having something like it in college - the parents will love it too because maybe, just maybe they’ll get some notes on that stationary - of course the envelopes would be cool too - there are places online if you don’t want to do it yourself that will do them fairly cheap as well, but I think making them might mean more down the road if you catch my drift! What do you think? too lame?
(of course my dad also had some that say 'Daddy-O, JC, and Spook" - irreverant but I think God might actually grin about it - remember that was from the 60’s I think)

Also, for the girls (and I know this is gonna be thought maybe kind of old fashioned too - but it meant soooo much to me) is that my mom and God mother took some of my old baby hats and blankets and made me some small handkerchiefs that I took to college with me - they had my initials on them - of course I also had the one later on that was from my christening gown bonnet that became the handkerchief that I carried on my wedding day. It really brought together the beginning of my life and the point I was at beginning university and getting married.

Sorry one last idea then I’ll shut up about stuff we’ve done or whatever - we’ve taken some of the pics from the Baptism and then took more recent pics and pics along the way growing up and made a little collage that was framed. I know these are time consuming in some cases (not so much with the stationary) but it will mean so much especially years later. Let me know what you think please!

God Bless and good luck!
