Pax Christi.

Please know that suicide goes against God’s plans for the suicide. That person may be in this world to do important work which can help many souls get to Heaven. Nobody is put here to “give up” and simply hope to somehow get into Paradise.

God’s Will and plans for you and me are most important! Suicide can result in a horrible afterlife for the suicide, and for others.

We all need each other!

God bless.
You are ignorant. You are arrogant. You cannot speak for God. Suicide is the result of psychosis: whether ongoing or emergent in the moment. God is aware of every single thought and experience each of us has. A priori: that last statement. As such, what sort of God would allow the infliction of mental illness and emotional torment on a soul knowing it will result in suicide? I think you need to address your understanding of God through studying Jesus. No mentally healthy or emotionally stable person just suddenly gets up and ends his/her life. It is ALWAYS the result of resident, or underlying psychosis. How dare you.

In a purely Black and White sense, suicide is a mortal sin and as such is damnable.

However, the argument could be made that someone who takes their own life may not be in their right frame of mind and therefore not fully accountable for their actions.
You’re an idiot, you are totally out of sync with serious mental illness and most likely are very self congratulatory on your “sainthood”. Suicide is not an option; it is not something done because one is bored. It is ALWAYS an expression of serious mental illness and emotional dysfunction and MOST mental illness is the result of BRAIN ANOMALIES and endocrinological malfunction that science does not, and will most likely never, understand. Yet YOU, almighty YOU, make a pronouncement such as this. My question: since you KNOW EVERYTHING, why not post the cure for cancer here, in this place, and free the world of this dreadful disease? God help you.

Sometimes telling someone to get “help” just makes it worse. That person needs t tell God that they need help. sometimes that “help” can ONLY come from God. Saying get “help” is such an uncaring uncompassionate simplistic answer that it is uncharitable. I say to someone that is thinking of suicide to pray and beg God to get off his duff and come to their assistance NOW!!! I never tell people to get “help” maybe that “help” is ME listening to them. Telling someone to get “help” is passing the buck onto someone else. Shrinks only medicate and get people on all kinds of mind numbing mind scrambling drugs that they “mask” the symptoms. when the real problem can be fixed by listening and saying that right word or doing that right “kind” act. never know. Lord forgive me for the things I have done and what I have FAILED to do.
Disingenuous. Suicide is the result of mental illness. Those without it cannot even begin to comprehend the depth and torment. Those who are seriously mentally ill often turn to God, as they should; however, this does not guaranty a “cure” because there is no “cure” for schizophrenia, bipolar, psychotic depression…only medication which is sometimes as bad as the condition itself. It amazes me that person with ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE in mental illness, family members all NORMAL, dares to make a statement on behalf of God regarding what He sees, how He receives, those souls who cannot bear one more moment of terrifying agony. THIS is what is wrong with the Church: sell appointed prophets and saints, those who judge but cannot bear the scrutiny of judgment…I thought Jesus taught us well against this but maybe you all need to go and actually READ THE NEW TESTAMENT.

what i was trying to convey was. that yes some medical conditions like schizophrenia and diseases like that need one of two things and maybe both. Medication that is prescribed by a licensed medical doctor in the art of mental medicine or direct healing from God. What I was talking about more was depression. I know a friend that lost his son to a hay wagon accident and he took it very hard (we all would) his Doctor started putting him on all these meds. He is a zombie sometimes. he don’t get up till 1 in the afternoon and mopes around and I just don’t call that healing. Sometimes healing is telling God that what you allowed happened totally angered me. I am mad at you How COULD you!!! I want answers. My point was about faith and not talking about faith that he exists. we all know he exists but taking faith the full way talking to God the way we talk to each other. I have told God that you really infuriated me. I’d rather be struck with lighting than be ignored. that is me. I am tired of the suffering and my heart goes out to the depressed the mentally ill as that is a serious imprisonment and only God can heal mental issues sometimes. Sometimes the ONLY healing can come from God. John 14. 12 Jesus addresses us by saying “Amen I say to you” what ever you ask for IN MY NAME I will do it." I say Jesus the Christ our savior who died and on the third day rose again in FULLFILLMENT of the scriptures you MUST honor what you tell us in HOLY scripture by which the Holy Catholic Church and faith was built on with St Peter our first pope. I was also saying that a lot of shrinks rely too much on medicating (easy way out to move along patients to get more) rather than talking it out, through fossilistic healing by way of finding out where your life took a bad turn, so you can rectify that event to get your life on track. Medicine can’t do what talking out things can. I have had depression (very mild) but it was from some events that happened in my life. and I found the cause and the problem talked it out and I was healed. No medication can heal certain things and that was my point. Talk things out with God tell him how you truly feel without any fears. That in it’s self can heal and might move the mountain Jesus talks about in Mark 11. 23-25. I tell that mountain to uproot its self and throw yourself into the sea. I have had enough of you mountain and that could be mount everest or the depression the cancer or the back pain that stops you enjoying life. The mountain can be schizophrenia, suicidal thoughts could be a terrible co worker that has it out for you. Proclaim HIS name about it, Jesus’ name is all powerful and all we need!!! I PROCLAIM YOUR NAME OVER MY SICKNESSES. and expect a miracle. Expect God to do it. and that was my point. You are very correct in that I have no experience in mental health as I am not a Doctor (but I WISH I could play one on tv) but being a former seminarian being a fallen away catholic who returned then went to seminary and being totally ON FIRE with Christ I do have the experience to share my MY feelings on this issue that is a mountain. God bless you and I pray that you have more charity in your heart for other posters who freely (freedom given by God) to express our thoughts on day to day issues.

That’s a very Protestant way of looking at heaven and hell.

I don’t believe in automatic hell for one sin.

Suicides usually aren’t in their right mind and therefore, shouldn’t be judged as rational.

Also, Catholics believe in purgatory. I like to think that suicides end up in purgatory so they can work out their issues.
I’ve always lived with the thought that a person who leads a good life and commits one bad deed does not define a person as bad and a person who leads a wicked life and does one good deed (mercy for example) does not make that person good or merciful. Whether this applies to things that are very horrible is another case.

Sadly, not everyone is taught this. In the tradition I grew up in, nobody made exceptions for mental health issues. So I’ve always struggled with my mom’s death in light of the information that I was given.

She clearly wasn’t in her right mind when she died.

When I experience panic attacks, I feel forced to commit suicide. I feel like I’m about to go crazy!!! Were you ever ‘evil’ enough to sprinkle some water on the back of an unsuspecting cat and watch it totally freak out? That’s what I feel like doing, totally freaking out. It’s not fun at all, and I feel insane! No, I do not expect that God would hold such a person culpable.

My daughter had a funeral Mass, she is buried in a Roman Catholic cemetery. The Roman Catholic church does not consider suicide a “sin” since it is clearly the result of distorted thoughts, severe emotional distress, dysfunction: my kid was a schizophrenic with bipolar illness, quite severe. If she’s in any place like “hell”, then God is not Whom I think Him to be.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church;
2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.
2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.
2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.
Hope this helps.

If a person commits suicide they go to hell?
Now in the strictest sense yes it will send a person to hell because suicide is a mortal sin, but considering all the things we don’t know about the person we can’t judge because there might be/are other factors influencing the persons decision making process. God is merciful and all knowing and is the just judge. So we can pray the Divine Chaplet of Mercy and a Rosary for them.

I suffered from thoughts of suicide when I was 14-15 when I was severely depressed, clinical depression (I’m 24 and haven’t dealt with those thought since that time). I hope the OP isn’t considering it or if the OP has a friend is helping them seek help.

In my prayers

May God be with you! :blessyou:

Catechism of the Catholic Church /suicide 2380-2383

(Online for free)

2282: Paragraph 2: Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering or torture can diminish the responsibility of one committing suicide.

2233: We should not despair the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

We pray for those who have taken their own lives and those family and friends that grieve for them.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church;
What the heck is ‘diminished responsibility?’ It’s either Heaven, Hell or Purgatory the way I have always understood it. It really sounds like a totally meaningless statement, if I’m looking at it correctly.

Verse 2283 was probably sufficient.

If a person commits suicide they go to hell?
I’ve quoted this peculiar story before. But I’ll put it here as I think it has some relevance to the issue of suicide.

I had a pastor who was quite prophetic. He died in January 1992. But probably not long before he died, he said to me one day “I think you’ll be doing a cleaning job for a while. You won’t like it much and you won’t be doing it for long, but I think the Lord will just want you to hear about a ghost.” He went on to say that he thought I’d seen this “ghost” before.

Now to me that sounded silly. So I basically ignored it, despite the fact I knew just how accurate his predictions were. So that would have been around 1990 or 1991.

Fast forward to 2006, and I did a cleaning job for a few months (about four months), didn’t like it much, and heard about a ghost. I was being shown around an old store in Ipswich, west of Brisbane, when the young bloke showing me the round suddenly remarked, “This place is haunted!”. I said “What?” He said that he thought a manager hanged himself upstairs in the 1890’s. I later asked the staff who worked there, and they said they thought he hanged himself downstairs in the 1960’s.

Anyway the young bloke said that one night all the stuff on one complete row of shelves just jumped up and landed on the floor! At other times he could push this heavy buffer around with his little finger - something was pushing it with him. He told me he didn’t like being there at night. It scared him. On the other hand I had quite positive vibes - I think the ghost expected me to do something for him.

I finally got around to ringing the priest at the local Catholic Church a couple of years later. I’d procrastinated because it was such a strange story. But he listened to me, and said “Leave it to me.” So I did.

But I didn’t quite know whether he’d said a mass or not. After all I was just a strange voice on the phone with a peculiar story to tell. I wondered what to do about it. But sometime in 2010 I happened to notice an Australian priest on this forum. He was the only Australian priest I’d seen on the forum.

But guest which church he was located at? When I looked up his profile and did a bit of cross checking, it turned out he was the newly appointed associate priest **at the very same church where I’d rung the main priest a couple of years before! **So through the email facilities offered by the forum, I sent him an email. After a brief exchange he said he really would say a mass for the suicide.

And this time I felt reassured. I’ve since found out this priest has been relocated to the Cathedral office, so he’s probably on first name terms with the Archbishop. I’m therefore wondering where the old pastor’s prediction will end up.

As for seeing the “ghost” before - way back around 1970, my father and I would sometimes go camping around a locality called Legume, just over the border from Killarney, not far from Warwick. These days there’s a bypass to the Cunningham Highway leading to Warwick, so you don’t have to travel through Ipswich. But way back in 1970 the bypass didn’t exist, so you had to go via Ipswich.

Casting my mind back, I remember when we were returning from one such trip, we were travelling through Ipswich. Now it would have been a Sunday or public holiday or we would not have been camping. Which meant there were few people around, and fewer still at work. Yet I noticed a bloke standing on the footpath with a briefcase and a resigned, frustrated look on his face.

As we drove past he looked at me, and I looked at him. I turned back to watch him, and as I did so he turned on his heel and walked through a closed door. It gave me the heebie geebies, and I wondered if I was going ga ga. So I did what I could to ignore it.

But that, I think, was the “ghost” because it was pretty much the same area where I cleaned the store years later.

The relevance to the topic? I think he was working out his purgatory, as a suicide, by being bound that store for around 40 or so years - 1960’s to 2010 (to be honest I’ve never been game enough to go back to the store and ask if they still happen to have a stray ghost or two still hanging around, and I don’t live in the area).

I remember reading somewhere where somebody said a saint or saints said the average stay in purgatory seemed to be about the equivalent of 40 earth years.

So … if he was working out his purgatory for his suicide, then that would indicate not all suicides are doomed.

That’s my peculiar story. I mean, if “… the Lord just wanted me to hear about a ghost…” as the old pastor predicted, then I have to assume there was some good reason for it. Even if I thought it was ridiculous at the time.

Diminish responsibility according to the degree one has control over their mental facilities.

How aware of the act the person is committing is an example.

I suppose it means less time, if any, spent in Purgatory.

If there is no time as we know of in Heaven. How can Purgation be any length of time. wouldn’t it be instant. I don’t know. but I always wondered if it would be literal years when there is only eternity after we die. I fully totally believe in Purgatory. But not sure how it fits into time and space I guess.
