Hi,

I was woundering, would it be a sin to not read the book for a class, and just use the summary? I really struggle with reading… Is it considered cheating? Lying? What if I have a test and I just use the summary and don’t read the book? It it more grave? What if the content is included on the final exam, is it grave then?

You should ask your priest. Strangers on the internet are not in a position to determine this. Sorry.

Have you been directed by your teacher to not use summaries? If not, then how could it be considered ‘cheating’? Are you telling folks that you’ve read the book itself? If not, then how could it be considered ‘lying’?

Are you asking whether it’s a good idea? (It’s not, generally speaking.). At the very least, you’re going to be missing out on what you’re supposed to be learning.

But, if you think it’s sinful, as such, what’s the nature of the sin that you think you’re committing?

I really struggle with reading…
Your question aside, you do sound like you are of an age where you should no longer be struggling with reading. Are your parents aware of this? Is your school doing anything about this? This is definitely something that should be sorted out sooner rather than later, when it will only be harder.

No. You are not cheating, or lying, unless you are asked directly - “Did you read the whole book assigned?” or something similar, and say “yes.”

Relax… But maybe put in a little more effort.

Maybe you’re not struggling hard enough. You’ll find it repays the effort.

As for the answer to your question … As others have already said, it’s No, that’s not cheating.

Talk to your teacher about your reading problem. Perhaps the school can help with an audio book alternative.
