The problem is that blm is now a political movement, it’s gone far beyond the literal statement of black lives mattering.

So saying blm now means you align with the whole movement. While I think we all would agree that black lives are important, not all agree with other facets of the blm ideology.

Yes, I did watch the video. He says highlighting one thing does not disparage another, so why does he consider highlighting all lives matter disparaging to blm?

And yes, blm is now a broad political movement, have you read their mission statement on their website?

I have actually read it, and don’t agree with some of it, but saying Black lives matter, does not mean someone is a member of an organization or a movement.

A slogan can be hard to separate from it’s movement.

Take the slogan “make America great again”. It is a phrase now inseparable from the Trump campaign, so much so that if you encounter someone using it you can be certain that they are Trump supporters. It is no longer used in a strictly literal sense devoid of political meaning.

I think black lives matter as a slogan was fine but in retrospect was bound to be misunderstood. Black lives also matter would have gotten the point across better.

I also think those who say all lives matter are evidence the slogan of black lives matter was bound to be misunderstood. And I find those who have such a hissy fit over people saying all lives matter kind of childish, to be honest.

If that’s all you got from the video, then no, you don’t get the point at all. But we’ll leave it at that as I think I get your your point.

I appreciate your concern with the topic. He is trying to defend his use of the term by saying that we focus on a group of people. But does he include himself among the people who don’t think black lives matter? I don’t know.
For Catholics, all lives matter. I have never met a Catholic that did not believe it, so I would never go around saying that. I wouldn’t go around condemning everybody by claiming that “You think that black lives don’t matter!” Why would I do that? I assume that they are respectful and good people - not that they are hateful racists.
That’s the difference. Some people look around and think “all of you people are racists and I have to tell you that Black Lives Actually Matter”.
That’s judgmental and unfair as I see it. Not worthy of a Christian minister.
For atheists, no lives matter. That’s part of the belief system.

But I respect your point of view and accept what you’re getting across.
If that parish (or whatever it is) wants to help black people, I hope they will do more than just go around saying that slogan.

I have some kids that are brown. They are from Latin America adopted as infants. Some were in line for abortion.
It’s a little strange but that’s why I refrain from the slogan about black lives. It would indicate that Hispanic, brown does not receive the focus on this. As Catholics, we should be more color blind. We need to give our best to everyone and care about them sincerely.
