My almost-91-year-old father will soon be moving from our home in Alabama to live in a nursing home in Houston, TX, where my mother is institutionalized due to a complete mental breakdown. He does not want to go because where he will be going, family members are trying their best to convert him to Lutheranism, which he adamantly refuses to do. But they have a way of wearing him down and lying as well.

At this nursing home Holy Communion is given on Mondays, and there is a Mass every Thursday. But nothing Catholic on Sundays. Family members cannot be counted on to take him to Mass and I have tried for years to get his parish to help with going to Mass and confession, without success. My big question is: Would the Thursday Mass fill his Sunday Mass obligation, or is he dispenses or what? We are very concerned about this. I’d like an answer from a priest or other authoritative person who really knows “the regs.”

if he can’t get to Mass on his own and Mass is not offered on Sunday, he has no obligation. it is wonderful that he has the opportunity for communion frequently and Mass on Thursday, but no it does not fill the obligation for Sunday Mass. He has no obligation. If he wants the authoritative explanation directly from a priest, he should ask the priest who comes in on Thursday, not here, we don’t have authority, even when we do have knowledge.

I live in California and my 86yr.old mom is too old to attend church so she sees the Sunday Mass on her t.v.

I know for a fact that seniors in nursing homes don’t have to attend Sunday Mass. Our church sends church members to see some Catholics in a nursing home to pray with them on Sundays.

I have an idea… maybe one of the workers in the home is Catholic and may be willing to take your dad to church if you pay that person some gas money. I would do that.

Maybe your grandfather could get the nursing home staff to make sure he get to the Thursday mass in the nursing home.

Or ask at the parish. Perhaps there’s a parishioner who could bring him to Mass (or a combination of people who could trade off).

All of you have some great ideas on how to get his dad to church on Sundays.

I have seen many seniors who love to attend church almost every day. It is part of their life-style. They truly enjoy attending church.

If I lived in your neighborhood I would take your dad to church.

I live in Glendale, Calif. so if anybody has a relative that needs a ride to church… let me know. Lucy

Thanks all of you for the info and suggestions. As of right now the move has been suspended. So Dad goes to Mass with us and to adoration at Mother Angelica’s Shrine. He loves it;an dit’s one of the reasons he doesn’t want to move.
