Could you tell me if people over the age of 65 are duty bound to attend Sunday Mass?

There is no “retirement” age for going to Mass. As long as you can go, you are under obligation to go. If it is impossible to get to Mass, no matter what your age, there is no obligation to go.

A dear friend of mine is 89 years old and gets to Mass most Sundays - she has a taxi take her there are home again.

Actually, I would think that it would become even more desirable to go to Mass as often as possible in old age, since we would be more and more aware of our mortality.

I am 67 and generally go to Mass seven days per week, by choice.

yes if they are otherwise able, mobile, not too ill etc. I live in a park full of people who are almost all over 65, well over, who spend their days cycling, swimming, gardening, maintaining mobile homes and RVs, golfing, playing tennis or softball and all manner of competetive sports, doing their own housework and yard care, plus engaging in every form of volunteer work, including building houses for the homeless, that you can imagine. If we are healthy enough for that lifestyle we are healthy enough to get to church.

Yes, if they are capable.

As far as I know the only thing that is dispensed because of age is the obligation to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. That obligation starts at the age of majority and ends on our 59th birthday (the beginning of our 60th year).

Thank you for your help. I am not in the habit of missing Mass. However, on one occasion recently, I did. This was due to the fact I felt rather ‘down’ due to family problems. Thanks for answering my question. Will get to Confession very soon.
