Sunday Missal Question

OK, folks … I need your help here.

I was talking to my mother this week and remarked to her about the weight of the new MTF Daily Roman Missal (1lb 15.4oz) that I recently purchased. She also bought a Daily Roman Missal (unknown publisher) from Amazon.com that was delayed in shipping. Being in her mid-seventies I told her that it was probably too heavy for her. I found out today that she is going to refuse delivery of the missal and has already received the shipping label to return the item.

I feel bad that I discouraged her form purchasing a Daily Missal. However, my parents are weekly Mass attendees and do not go to daily Mass so it would be a waste of money anyway.

My question is: has anyone purchased/received a Sunday Only Missal (minus the weekday readings)? I would expect that this edition would be quite a bit lighter/thinner.

I would like to buy my mom and dad a Sunday Missal for Christmas. A few websites I’ve found have a shipping date of 30 DEC.

Does anyone know of a website that has this edition to be shipped immediately? I would like to order one ASAP for delivery by Friday or Monday next week as we live in different states but will be travelling to their house for Christmas on Tuesday the 20th.

I previously used the St. Joseph Sunday Missal and was quite pleased with it. There are several companies which offer Sunday only Missals, most are much lighter than the Daily Missal you mention(which i now use), and another possible option would be the Missal set from St. Joseph which is a three volume set with two Daily Missals and the Sunday Missal. I thought that St. Joseph was already shipping Sunday Missals.

I think the problem stems from the fact that there were not enough of the St. Joseph Sunday missals with the new translations printed to meet the demand. It appears that a lot of people wanted to give missals with the new translation as Christmas gifts. I wanted to buy them for my family, but I am going to have to wait. You might want to check out the new missal from the Daughters of St. Paul, the St. Paul Sunday Missal. It also come in a daily edition. It is beautiful and will be available in January. The new missal will have to be belated Christmas presents.

Thank you for the information. I guess it will have to be a belated Christmas gift then. I looked through most of the Catholic bookstore sites and everything is backordered until January 2012.

Don’t most churches have missals that the congregation can borrow? Or is this more for home use vs church use?

I have St. Joseph and St. Paul versions. They are different in the detail. In St. Joseph’s the readings and gospel contain explanations (sermons) that are explicit to the readings and gospels and a sermon for all three. St. Paul’s does not. Well not as extensive. There are some other differences too.

In response to pilots13 question. A large number of churches don’t have them like 30-40 years ago. Priests have told me it’s because people “borrow” and never return them. Yes, even (some) “good christians” steal/borrow.

After all, borrowing without returning is legally and morally stealing, isn’t it???
