In a situation where a person would be a leather tramp on their way to the Alaskan wilderness, does the Sunday Obligation ever apply?

One still has an obligation to attend Mass. When it is physically impossible to fulfill the obligation, one has not committed a sin.

One should talk to one’s priest about the matter, prior to departing on said trek. BTW, there are Catholic Churches in many remote places in Alaska including Denali National Forest. Check the websites for the dioceses of Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks.

When I checked studies a couple years ago not only were younger men joining the priesthood, but a third of them liked hiking. If you are going as a group and plan a bit ahead of time you way be able to locate a priest who would love to go and could make the time.
