Hello,

I have a repeated question about homework on Sundays.
Here is something from the CCC:

“2193 “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound . . . to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body” (CIC, can. 1247).”

Does homework count as a business concern? Thank you

Andrew K

If you have homework to get done, then I’d say this is the same as if you had to go to work on Sunday: it would be best to have a free Sunday schedule if reasonably possible, but if you have to go to work then you have to go to work. Same with homework: if you can reasonably get stuff done on Friday and Saturday then it is probably better, but if you still have homework left on Sunday then you can’t really use a “religious exemption” excuse on Monday.

No. Homework, study, or other intellectual work is not the servile labor that we avoid on Sunday.

The key is not whether it is a labor or a business concern (CCC 2185 says “work or activities”), but whether it impedes worship, joy, and relaxation. Examine whether, in your circumstances, it does.

Mark 2:27
Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

God knows that we need rest. We need to worship God. We need down time.
Like a mother who insists that her children take a nap, God wants us to take time out.

This law was given to the Israelites have 400 years of slave labor. They welcomed the respite from labor.

It would be wise to get your homework done before Sunday and take time on Sunday to give yourself time to reflect, to rest.

It would be wise to remove yourself from the 24/7 rat race we have created for ourselves.

I would say no. I’m sure the homework wasn’t assigned to be done “On Sunday” Therefore if you put if off and put it off and bang it’s Sunday again whoops cant do it … Wouldn’t apply Could depend I suppose, for example I work some Sundays , still go to Mass in the morning and then work in the afternoon, would this not work for you when it comes to home work ? Depending on how far you live from your church of course …
