Sunday Work and Jail Visit

I have been informed by more than one priest that I am not sinning by working on Sunday… It still makes me uncomfortable, however. Anyways, I figure if I am employed somewhere and I am not working on Sunday, the someone else is anyways… I wish it were differently. Anyways, I have a friend in jail who needs help. I am schedule to work early Sunday morning. Visitation is Sunday morning. Would it be sinful for me to ask someone to cover my shift so that I can visit this person who is desperately slipping away from the Light which he already does not know?

Visiting the imprisoned is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy; it would not be a sin to visit your friend in jail on Sunday.

I do not know. i have been assured by priests that it is not a sin for me to work on Sundays (College student, summertime) but I just felt odd asking. My employer has it taken care of.

Ah ok then. You are being scrupulous. As was mentioned above visiting the imprisoned is a Corporal Work of Mercy. Doing God’s work is no menial labor. You are doubly keeping the Sabbath holy. It is to be encouraged! So God bless and be at peace.

Matthew 12:11-12: Jesus "said to them, "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? {12} “Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

well I have been allowed to leave work for an hour to visit and then head back… It works I suppose. Yes, my scrupulosity is painful. Depression and anxiety… worsening a bit.

I feel you exactly. I’ve been fighting scruples for a few years now and the other stuff. I’ve been getting better thanks to God but some days are better then others. Listen to your regular confessor. Do your best to be obedient to him. Since he is in the person of Christ he is allowed to be your conscious while yours heals and you regain your trust in God. There are writings about this that explain it better then I can.

I think that’s the root of our problem that and pride. I think I can be perfect (going about it the wrong way) and follow the letter of the law and neglect the spirit of it and I sometimes use confession to drive myself crazy in a way that Jesus never intended the sacrament to be used for. The devil uses scruples to drive away the Lord’s peace and I think try to ruin our resolve and our good intentions.
