Hi

What are the activities that we should not do on sundays. I read in old testament that we should ideally spend more time with God on sundays and should not work much. Can anyone be more specific about the activities that should not be performed.

Thank you in advance

you did not read anything about Sunday in the OT because Saturday, the last day of the week, is Sabbath in the OT. Christ established Sunday, the first day of the week as the new Sabbath because he rose from the dead on Sunday. The commandment of God is actually keep holy the Sabbath day, and it goes on to give specific instructions to the Hebrew people. They needed specific instructions, and stricter laws, as time went on because the broke the law so frequently.

The catechism of the Catholic church says we keep the Lord’s day holy by refraining from unnecessary servile work (i.e. manual labor to earn a living), by assisting at Mass, works of charity, prayer and reading scripture, and being with our families.

We should not need to consult a list of what work may or may not be done. We should be looking for ways to truly make the day Holy, to consecrate it to the Lord, in all our actions.

I don’t know what is taught today about working on Sundays but when I was young (many years ago) no housework was done on Sundays except what absolutely had to be done such as cooking and cleaning the dishes; no sewing, or cleaning. There are always people who have to work on Sundays and that was permitted since people have to make a living.

Some types of work are nessecary on a Sunday, such as medical professions (includes caregivers and hospice workers), police, firefighteres, and maybe some civic workers, too.

Something like a retail store, or grocery store wouldn’t exactly be acceptable.

Thank you all.

Earlier getting into Christainity, i was much involved in doing, cleaning up my wardrobe, then applying some packs on face, hair etc. Then from 1 year when i moved towards Jesus, I stopped doing these things on Sundays. Unexpectedly this sunday, after returning from Mass, i did some facial , applied some pack to hair. etc . Then I realized and a question rose to myself, whether its right to do these all on sundays.

Can anyone share with me whether we can do this on sunday.

Thank you
Anu

as long as you make your Mass obligation and spend time in prayer, why would you not do personal grooming as well?
