Do Catholics have outdoor sunrise Masses or is this a protestant thing to do?

To me there is nothing wrong with outdoor Mass, in Ireland in penal times, we were foribidden to attend Mass, so the Priests had Mass on tables of stone called Mass rocks, there are still a lot of Mass Rocks in Ireland.
It’s a pity that some people forget the sacarfice that Irish people had to endure at the hands of the British, Oliver Cromwell, who said " if I could only take the Rosary from their hands, then I would have them defeated".
Aint that right my Irish brothers ?

A Mass can be celebrated outdoos with the permission of the Bishop for good reason or necessity. Such as a large number of people, too many to fit into the church building.

Some shrines and even some parishes are built with outdoor altars under special canopies. It’s much harder to do well, and it’s a lot of work, but I’ve seen it done reverently.

Every year on Divine Mercy Sunday there is a massive outdoor Mass in Stockbridge, MA at the Divine Mercy Shrine which is run by the Marian Fathers. It is very well done and I believe it usually shown on EWTN as well.

Our former pastor was into outdoor Mass’ being that he was an outdoor person. They were always held in back of the church and there we set slowly sinking into the soil with acorns dropping on our heads. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the church wasn’t next to a busy highway.

According to Canon Law:

"Can. 932 §1. The eucharistic celebration is to be carried out in a sacred place unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise; in such a case the celebration must be done in a decent place."

Obviously, the persecution in Ireland made the “Mass Rocks” a question of necessity. It’s hard to imagine a circumstance of “necessity” for the practice in contemporary America.

Something to consider.

For starters, protestants don’t have “mass”. Secondly, in all my years as a protestant, I’ve yet to see any religious celebration similar to a regular Sunday church service take place outside.

If I’m correct, the creator of this thread is referring to a type of Sunrise Service, which takes place on Easter in a graveyard. When I was a practicing Presbyterian, I attended a multi-denominational ( Baptist, Assembly, Presbyterian, Methodist ) service. I’m thinking it’s only Protestant, but I’m not completely sure.

Most sunrise services, protestant or catholic, are held inside. The sunrise service started with the catholic church with sunrise mass on Easter morning, this was the first mass of Easter, held at, you guessed it, sunrise. The protestants latter adopted the sunrise service idea. The catholic church stoped it when the Saturday anticipated mass for Sunday was approved and the Easter Vigil mass, on Saturday night, became the first mass of Easter. I don’t know if you have noticed, but, all of the masses for Easter, begining with the vigil mass, are all different (the readings and prayers are different), the most sollem and Holy being the Easter Vigil.

Jesus gave sermons both inside & outside, His first recorded one was in the Temple at 12 years old.

In our parish just about the only outdoor mass is at the cemetary on Memorial Day. Sometimes at the larger Boy Scout encampments we have an outdoor Mass if a priest is available. Back in the late sixties outdoor Masses and Mass in the home were quite a common practice, which kind of died out after a couple of years. My in-laws, God rest threir souls were from Ireland and spoke quite often of the “Troubles” even in the early 20th century. My wifes great grandmother was said to have died of the “green mouth disease”(starved and eating grass) rather than deny her faith in order to receive food from the "Black and Tans.

It seems to me that all of the Masses celebrated by the Holy Father on his world-wide travels were actually held out of doors, with a canopy for the altar. I even have watched the Pope say Mass outdoors in front of St. Peter’s.

I know there were extenuating circumstances, large crowds for example, but if the Holy Father does this I don’t think we should complain.

All the outdoor Easter sunrise liturgies I’ve ever seen were outdoors.

Wow…Your question brought back wonderful memories of Sunrise Services on many Easters when I was a child. They were so special! Once, we actually went to a hill…

I have been to ourdoor Masses, but no Sunrise ones…I think a Sunrise Mass on Easter Sunday would be awesome!
