Hey y’all,

So I was doing a rosary last night and I used to have this habit of saying “if this [object] does this certain thing, then it means this.” Needless to say, during my rosary I randomly said if this crucifix lands with Jesus facing up then I’m in a state of grace. I did the little quick spinning of it to see what it would do. By the time it landed, I realized what I was doing and tried stopping quickly. Was there a sin in this? Thanks!

That would be superstitious.

If you mentally “caught” yourself when you realized what you were doing was ridiculous, there probably wasn’t sin involved.

There are three stages leading to sin
  1. Temptation (the idea pop up)
  2. Delectation (you take pleasure in the idea)
  3. Consent (you indulge in the idea)
It doesn’t reach sin until #3.

No sin we commit is mortal without you knowing it is mortal, because that is one of the conditions. Because of this, you would not need some “sign” that you are in a state of grace. You know if you have committed a serious sin.

And yes, superstition and divination is wrong.

It sounds like you have something going on like compulsive behaviors/intrusive thoughts.

Get help from a competent mental health professional and your pastor.
