Susan G Komen/ Planned Parenthood info

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone had any links to documents or any sort of proof of the Susan G Komen economic contributions to planned parenthood. I searched thru old threads on this topic since I know its been covered before, but there is a lot dead links etc (since the threads are old) and the links I have followed that are not dead do not have substantial evidence I can use to show others. I tried calling the Susan G Komen foundation today but, when I ask if SGK has given funds to Planned Parenthood, they keep sending me to speak with a woman who is not available, so I just get the woman’s voice mail. Any suggestions as to what questions I can ask if I ever do get through to someone (ie I was going to ask if they donated money, and if so, if they are 100% sure none of this money will be used for abortions, if they have proof of it, etc) because as a person who has donated to the foundation I think I have a right to know.

I just want to make sure that indeed they are giving money to Planned Parenthood, and that that money may be used for abortions, contraceptives, advertising, etc. before I go and tell others about this (my family is very pro helping the SGK foundation).

I received an email from the Susan B. Anthony listserv outlining the connection, but I can’t recall all of it. Basically it was about a former board member or something from SGK who stepped down when she discovered the connection with PP and the fact that SGK refused to publicize legitimate research about the connection between abortion and breast cancer.

I know this is all hearsay but maybe you can find more at the Susan B. Anthony website?

Much of the Komen information was found through PP’s annual report listing donors and publicized that way. The grants are at the local level, to individual PPs so the info may be hard to compile. A couple of pro-life watchdog groups have attempted to gather this info.

I’d suggest contacting ALL (American Life League) and their affiliate STOPP for pointers on what info is already out there and how you can get it.

The Komen foundation will have a list of grant recipients-- maybe on their website, maybe you’ll have to ask for their written annual report. Perhaps you’ll get further with Komen if you call stating you want a written list of all their grant recipients rather than info on PP.

I posted this on a similar thread awhile ago, shortly after I contacted the Komen Fdtn. regarding their link to Planned Parenthood. Here is the email I received back:

"Thank you for contacting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation regarding your concerns about grants made to Planned Parenthood for breast health services. Our mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. We deeply appreciate your past support and hope the following information will be helpful in understanding this issue.

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) review of recent scientific literature reveals that no conclusive evidence exists to suggest that abortion increases a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer. For highlights and links to the findings associated with this topic, please visit the Komen Foundation’s website, [komen.org](http://www.komen.org/).

The common thread to the individuals we serve is that they are at risk for breast cancer. The Komen Foundation and its Affiliates do not provide any funding for abortions or for any activities outside the scope of our mission to eradicate breast cancer. And we do not discriminate on age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability or decisions people have made in their lives.

Seventy-five percent of the money raised by Komen Affiliates stays in their communities to provide grants to local organizations or groups who can best address the gaps identified through the needs assessment. A minimum of 25 percent of the net proceeds from any Komen Affiliate event directly supports the Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program, which is the nation’s largest private funding source for breast cancer research.

The grants funded by the Komen Foundation and its Affiliates are specific to the Komen Foundation’s mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Komen Foundation Affiliates are responsible for conducting community needs assessments to identify gaps in breast health and breast cancer services within their respective communities. All Komen Affiliate grant applications are solicited through an open request for proposals and are reviewed by a Grants Committee comprised of local physicians, community health professionals, and breast health advocates. Any not-for-profit organization may apply for a grant from the Komen Foundation to provide services specific to our mission to eradicate breast cancer. The Grants Committee recommends to the Affiliate’s board of directors those grant applications that should be approved for funding, and grant recipients are required to provide detailed reports to the funding Affiliate at least bi-annually.

All community grants are restricted to provide vital breast health education, screening and treatment services for underserved women. The services funded by Komen Affiliates include breast health education programs, screening mammograms, clinical breast examinations, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasound, program promotion, and salary support for outreach workers and registered nurses that provide breast health education and clinical breast examinations.

In many urban and rural areas, Planned Parenthood may be the only source of free or low-cost women’s health screening services (e.g., pap smears, mammograms, clinical breast exams, etc.). Unfortunately, many underserved women find breast cancer at a later and more aggressive stage and have a higher mortality rate from this disease. Some Komen Affiliates provide restricted grants to local Planned Parenthood clinics that offer vital breast health services for underserved women in their communities. These services often help to provide otherwise unavailable breast screening for women ages 40 to 50, which may not be covered by the Centers for Disease Control’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.
