I learned how to do this from a home schooling family. If you want to farm swallowtail butterflies with the kids this summer, plant dill and parsley and the adults will come and lay eggs. An ice cream pail with a J cloth cover works great as a caterpillar house. You can watch the whole process on your kitchen table. Very cool. The blue color has a tremendous sparkle that is surprising.

I don’t have a photo handy but I stretch it over the top like a drum and secure it with elastic or string. The holes allow for ventilation but they can’t go through the holes and escape.

This is looking into the pail. I lined it with a newspaper, put in fresh parsley every day, and sticks for them to climb on.

It’s healthier for them to just be 2 or 3. I ended up with lots on my parsley and shared with the neighbor kids.
