Swearing on network primetime now?

Last week on NBC, I was watching the show Superstore. They swore (“Jesus!”) twice. Just tonight, they did it again. Man it makes my blood boil when people use our Lord’s name as a synonym for absolute disgust. You could lose your career for uttering the word for a bundle of sticks, but not an issue to swear on primetime network tv.

While misusing the Lord’s name is highly distasteful, it does not surprise me.given the many other equally distasteful things that would never have been broadcast 15 or 20 years ago.

Is that new?
I seem to remember people taking the Lords name in vain on television for a very long time, including on the Nickelodeon network.

I’m with you Tony. The best way to deal with this is just to unplug in my opinion.

I hear OMG all the time on regular tv, but Jesus’ name on network tv is new to me. While I don’t use omg myself, nor do my kids who are adults now, I somehow feel it’s different than actually speaking his name. Secular people might not think it’s that big of a deal. If they can’t seem to stop, try using the name of someone they love in the same context, and see how long it takes for them to “get it”. Especially those who like to throw “effin” in there as in J effin C. Imagine the look on Mr. Tom Smith’s face if as an expression of your total disgust about something you exclaim “Tommy effin Smith!”.

Archie Bunker dropped a GD on tv in the 1970’s. He and meathead were arguing about watergate.

Archie dropped all kinds of bombs back then. How did the GD go over back then? I don’t remember that one.

It’s the episode with the heat wave and Vincent Gardenia plays the new neighbor.

There are ratings on TV shows (and movies) for a reason.

This allows the viewer to be forewarned of the content.

“Superstore” is rated TV-14 because of profanity, sexual jokes, etc.

Great points! You never hear someone say Mohammad when they hit their finger with an hammer or get mad at someone. But hey, it is ok to use our Lord’s name like that. Never understood that, and yes I have been guilty of it at times, however it’s nothing new. That’s just one of the many reasons I don’t watch very much if any primetime TV and try to ignore when I hear it in public.

That’s not the point. I get that for certain things. But when did Christ’s name as a slur become acceptable? Like I said, a bundle of sticks wouldn’t make it on air, at least mot without being bleeped. So what rating would that get? My point is that it is now acceptable. We jump through hoops not to offend anyone else, but it’s ok then to teach 14 year olds (according to the rating) that saying “Jesus” is acceptable. It’s sad.

Exactly. South Park couldn’t even air an episode on a cable channel (non network) because they were going to depict someone in particular. We can’t even get a “beep”.

Sorry to harp on this, but it really burns me up. We get hammered with all this sensitivity for everyone else, but we get an f-u.

Amazon Prime has some old shows.
I was born in 1992.
I’ve been watching the Waltons along with Highway to heaven and The Andy Griffith Show.

If you’d like I can share some apps that are free for TV alternatives.

Well maybe Believers in Jesus should start taking action? Instead of television networks thinking is permissible to take Jesus’s name in vain why don’t we call them and complain about that? Let your voice be heard.

Catholics correct me if I said anything wrong please.

It’s been done.
It doesn’t work.

Boycotts and letters don’t work. The networks don’t care.
There aren’t enough of us who do care to make a difference.

Polite complaints are always good. It’s good to rate TV but why even add the profanity? What’s the point? To get people used to it? To make people believe it’s OK?
Correct me please if I’m wrong but taking Jesus’s name in vain would be under blasphemy better than profanity right?
It’s not OK. I watch very little TV. And I suspect some of the coming ‘streaming’ shows will be unwatchable: profanity, blood and gore, and sexual situations. Those ‘pushing the envelope’ will find they have very little envelope left. And people will get fed up and turn it off.
Have you looked at on IMDb in the parents guide section for the recent popular shows? And what they have for warning about the sexual stuff?
If you haven’t please consider. You might be surprised.

If people didn’t want to see the pornographic stuff for example of Game of Thrones then maybe we wouldn’t have that.

We don’t even have love stories anymore in the theaters correct me if I’m wrong please. For example we have stuff like Fifty Shades of Grey for women nowadays and the other series ‘After’ or something.

The show you are talking about also has sexual immorality, I am not sure why you would expect high minded language. People swear, people take God’s name in vain and have been doing it since the beginning. It was so wide spread that the earliest laws spoke about it.

It is not about offending people, it is about the fallen world.
