How frequently is there a “Synod of Bishops”? I understand that there is a synod going on right now. Is there a synod going every year? Every couple of years? I’m a little confused on this.

What can a “Synod of Bishops” do that a single bishop cannot?

The Synod going on right now is about serious matters. Michael Voris said how he had recieved an Email from a Bishop being worried about the state of things. Lets pray for Men in Purple and Our Pappa In white and Holy Mother Church. This is shaping up to be a dark hour and they need our prayers.

Sorry to derail the thread a little bit. Just wanted to chip in my two cents

Look on the Vatican website for all the background info you could ever want: 🙂

Paul VI started these Synods to continue the spirit of collegiality after Vatican II. They generally occur every 3-4 years. The current one is the 13th Ordinary Synod since 1967. Each Ordinary Synod is called to discuss a specific topic. This one is on the New Evangelization. Eventually, the Pope will pull together everything from the Synod and release a Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortaion. Those usually come 1-2 years after the Synod.

There are also local synods that occur here and there that are usually called for the bishops of a specific geographical area to evaluate what’s going on in their area.

Not exactly. They are called to serve the needs of the Church, just like the Pope.

Blessings,
Marduk
I think you misunderstand my statement. By “at the pleasure of the Pope,” I mean that they are called by the Pope and no one else.
