Synod of Carthage Denounces Prayer to Saints/Mary

I was watching Faith Under Fire on PAX. They had a Catholic and a Protestant giving their views about Mary. The Protestant claimed that the Synod of Carthage denounced any intercessory prayers to Mary or the Saints. Unfortunately, the Catholic had no time to respond. šŸ˜¦

Most of what I find that speaks of the Synod of Carthage mentions only the synodā€™s dealing with the canon of scripture. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Canons of Carthage are here. No mention of intercessory prayer.

This bothers me a lot.

If there was no decree or discussion on intercessory prayer at that council, the net effect of that program is to promote a myth which we are sure to hear repeated by Protestants from now on.

I could see the possibility of some discussion on the subject, some cautionary statements or regulating canons but it does not seem that there actually are any. I sure would like to know what justification that debator had in saying such a thing.

I note from reading elsewhere on the net that there have been as many as 20 councils held at Carthage, none of them considered ecumenical I presume. If there was good information available on all of them, it would be a lot of writing to wade through. My guess would be that most of the documentation is scanty at best.

I would drop them a line. Seriously, to say that the that the Synod denounced any intercessory prayers to Mary or the saints is ludicrous. It is only a myth that many heretical Protestants use to discredit the church.

Gee who was the film editor of this special the protestant pastorā€™s brother. To not allow time for a rebuttal is just nor fair they should have edited out the false claim and not leave the accusation without a reasonable time for response.

In the end it doesnā€™t matter too much anyway even if we could prove Carthage said we should pray to Mary. (From What I know the council doesnā€™t mention prayer to saints in anyway either affirming or denying it.) A protestant would not allow a council to change their mind that prayer to saints is unbiblical but it does add fuel to the fire that cathoolcism contradicts itself in its councils and rulings. OF course this is not true. Did devotions to the mother of God develop over time. Yes that would be true. But were devotions and prayers to her ever condemend? No that was never the case either. Unfortunatley the documentary leads you to believe otherwise.

Get used to it Michaelā€¦It happens a lot.

One way to insure that you can find all such references in any document w/o havinā€™ ta read the whole thing is to copy and paste it to a word document in your comp and then use your find feature to locate all the places where a given word is used then just click ā€œfind nextā€ all the way through the doc to get all the info ya need. If ya find it you can then read the context to insure that it means what they claim it does (I have found that this is where they most often fail!) then post the context to show that they had it wrong.
Needless to say you can save the document if ya want, but you donā€™t have toā€¦I just bookmark the place where I found the doc online in a special folder.( Just in caseā€¦)
