Does this “synodal” church seem to be another word for Protestant denominationalism? How does Universal fit into synodal?

Synodal means in assembly, in a meeting (from Greek “synodos”). It’s about the bishops meeting, it has nothing to do with denominational.

I understand the definition. It just seems like it’s going to look like denominations. if each synod creates unique practices for their region it will look an awful lot like Protestant denominations.

What if each group of Bishops determines new practices, and doctrines for their regions.

Is this about the German Synod? What was that all about? I understood that the Vatican never approved it yet they held it. What’s up with that? The Catholic version of the Ukraine crisis?

The Church has a long and active history of councils and synods, both local/partial and universal/ecumenical/general. What would be problematic is synods weakening or departing from the unity of faith, instead of strengthening it, which is their true purpose.

The Church is local as well as universal so there’s always going to be a tension between the two. This doesn’t just apply at the regional level but also the national and diocesan levels too. To some extent, there always have been and always will be local variations in the way things are done but what we believe always remains unchanged. Some things, particularly those which affect the universality of the Church, will always remain unaltered but there’s also much to be said for recognising and adapting to local needs.
