Hello!

I am a HS catechist. This 6 week class I am leading is on the New Testament. I was given sessions 7 and 8 in the Teen Tinmeline bible study (The Great Adventure) and the ACTS bible study. Session 7’s video was 41 mins long and the kids were bored at the end despite Mark Hart being pretty engaging on video. There was no clear cut good time to pause the video for a little discussion. Has anyone else ever used this/these? Ideas?

Thanks!
Kim

There is an instructor manual and workbooks for the teens that go with the videos. There are many activities available for each segment in the workbooks along with good discussion questions.

You should have no problem discussing the segments, bringing in other aspects or activities using the workbooks or simply creating your own activities.

I suggest you view the segment ahead of time and use the teacher resources to develop a lesson around the video segment. If you simply show the video you are really doing a disservice to this excellent series.

Also, have the students seen segments 1-6? To start with segment 7& 8 misses a LOT of the context of this video series and might also explain part of why they are not engaged.

I did review the video first and I do have the instructor workbook–I always prep for my classes:) Have to be prepared for teenagers 🙂 No they have NOT seen 1-6 and I wonder if that’s why I am having a hard time figuring this out, too. Our classes are 1 1/2 hours so a 40 minute video really takes up a lot of time. I will re-look at the instructor book again, but I think since we aren’t doing this stuff in order from the beginning the timeline concept is lost. Thanks for the reply.

I apologize if it came across as if I did not think you prepared for classes. Not at all. It sounded like, from your post, you were just handed the video and nothing else sort of last minute.

Some people are not aware that there are materials that go with the bible studies-- workbooks for the students and an instructor manual, timelines, bracelets, etc. The workbook includes home study activities-- the kids are supposed to not simply watch the video but open up their bibles, read the stories Mark talks about, do activities, discuss through questions and reflection.

We implemented the T3 series 5 years ago. I’ve never had complaints about it. The kids really get into it. But, yes, you definitely need to do activities and expand on it.

And, you mentioned you were teaching a 6-week course. I am not understanding that timing. The Matthew study is 8 DVD segments, plus you have segments 7 & 8 from T3. That is at least 10 weeks, and more like 20 to do it right.

I question your religious ed coordinator’s plan here. It doesn’t make any sense at all.

Oh, and just so you know, even though he talks all the way through and it may not seem like there is a good time to pause, I am heavy-handed with the pause button and I pause frequently to define terms and expand on points he is making. Since the kids have ZERO bible knowledge, I often have to explain something he said so it makes sense to them. I just pause, talk a little, then resume. It’s never been a problem. I also encourage them to ask questions as it goes along if they don’t understand something.

No worries 🙂 I wasn’t offended 🙂

I think the plan was to perhaps augment the ACTS bible study with the last 2 sessions of the T3. I will try and pause the movie some this time–he just is so full of information it’s hard to figure out when to hit pause 🙂 PLUS I was playing it on a computer with projector. I’ll have to see if we have the remote. I just really want the kids to get the most out of the class. 👍 Thanks for your thoughts and encouragement. I’ll dig and get creative!

Oh, duh, Acts. That one is only 4 sessions. Matthew is 8. sorry, you said New Testament and I somehow associated Matthew in my head even though you said Acts in your first post.

Still, 6 weeks isn’t really enough time to do that properly, IMHO.

We’ll see how it goes. I am sure she is open to feedback 🙂 Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!

I taught the timeline in a homeschool co-op once, but I decided not to show the dvds and just use the material because I think kids tune out dvds. I like to be more interactive.

I think that directly teaching the material is the way to go. You can use the workbook. I had the kids make a lapbook with a timeline in it. It went pretty well. Some kids like lapbooks, some don’t, but at least they are moving and getting the information reinforced and have a tangible product to which to refer.
