Tabernacles on side altars?

In most older churches, there are side altars to St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sometimes, there are what appear to be tabernacles under the statues of the BVM and St. Joseph. Are these tabernacles and is the Blessed Sacrament reserved there? If they aren’t tabernacles, what are they and does anyone else know what I’m referring to?

even in st peter’s in rome the tabernacle is i his own chapel, not on the main altar. its even required to have a special place for the eucharsist,

Yes these are tabernacles. The Blessed Sacrament remaining after Holy communion was reserved there from a Mass celebrated on that altar in times past. These altars are no longer used and so the tabernacles are empty. Many times the Blessed Sacrament is secured in one of these during Good Friday and Holy Saturday while the main tabernacle is left open and the lamp put out.

My church still uses them.

There should only be one tabernacle today. I’m not sure why any parish would choose not to obey the Church on this matter:

GIRM #314: In accordance with the structure of each church and legitimate local customs, the Most Blessed Sacrament should be reserved in a tabernacle in a part of the church which is noble, worthy, conspicuous, well decorated and suitable for prayer. As a rule, there should be only one tabernacle, immovable, made of solid and unbreakable material and not transparent, and locked so that the danger of desecration is avoided as much as possible. Moreover, it is suitable that the tabernacle be blessed, before it is considered for liturgical use, according to the rite described in the Roman Ritual."
