Take Action Now to Hold Sponsors of FX’s Nip/Tuck Accountable for Obscene Content

Without question, Nip/Tuck is one of the most sexually explicit, profane, and violent television programs in the history of American television - and it’s about to get worse.

We need your immediate help to send a loud-and-clear message to the sponsors who are paying to bring this salacious material into our homes.

The FX network and the series creator are on a mission to obliterate every remaining taboo for television, and they don’t care how many young minds they harm in the process.

Series creator Ryan Murphy has said “I wanted to do something so violent it will shock even me.” And “It’s tough to get that sexual point of view across on television. Hopefully I have made it possible for somebody on broadcast television to do a rear-entry scene in three years. Maybe that will be my legacy.”

Last month a new season of Nip/Tuck debuted on the FX cable channel, and once again the series creators have mined the very depths of depravity for content.

Remember, this isn’t some pay-per-view porn channel or even a premium cable network like HBO. FX is part of the basic cable package, which means it spills into most homes in America. If you want Disney Channel or ESPN or Animal Planet or History Channel for your family, you are forced to pay every month for programs like Nip/Tuck. In fact, this horrific content is available to nearly 48 million children nationwide!

To see a clip of the show, or to read examples of the content FX thinks is appropriate for advertiser-supported basic cable, go to ** www.parentstv.org/ptc/action/niptuck2/content.htm** . But we must warn you that the content is extremely graphic. It describes exactly what appeared in the broadcast. Please do not let any children see this material.

It’s obvious this show is on TV purely for its shock value, and it is equally obvious that neither the creator, nor the FX Network executives, nor the sponsors gave a thought to the potential harm inflicted on children who might be exposed to such explicit material.

Well, we can ensure that the SPONSORS, including Chattem Inc. (makers of Selsun Blue), General Motors, U.S. DenTek Corporation (makers of the DenTek Dental Pick), LG Electronics Inc., Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc., Match.com, Toyota, Combe Inc. (makers of Aqua Velva), and the Alberto-Culver Co. (makers of V05) at least, will give it a thought now – by protesting their irresponsible financial support of this content.

The Parents Television Council is leading a campaign to stop television networks from continuing to violate commonsense decency standards… and we’re doing it by publicly exposing the irresponsible sponsor companies that are underwriting it.

They must be held accountable for enabling such indecent and offensive material to be aired.

First, visit ** www.parentstv.org/ptc/action/niptuck2/main.asp** and sign our Warning to the Sponsors of Nip/Tuck. Or write a personal letter to the sponsors of Nip/Tuck and to FX telling them what you think of their utter disregard for TV decency standards.

Time and again we’ve seen what can happen when PTC members, like you, take action. More and more companies have made the responsible decision to refuse to underwrite obscene programming just like this because PTC members took the time to write.

I think obscenity in general is horrible on TV and in our society. But I don’t really see a big difference between HBO and FX and Entertainment Network. HBO is a little worse than the other two, but if I choose to have them in my house, then I must moniter what my children watch and adjust the settings on my parental controls. The ratings on Nip/Tuck is TV M, which is essentially a rated R for motion pictures (except no frontal nudity and no F-word). There are no other differences.

Non-cable channels are government property and must be held to a higher standard.

Exactly - monitor what your children watch. Monitor what your children watch. Then, monitor what your children watch.

Be dilligent about formation of your children, teach them from day one how to live their faith.

The show is way over the top. But, it comes on at 10pm around here. Kids should be in bed by then.

I have to agree with the other posters. WE need to monitor what children watch. I also agree that the time of this show is on at 10 pm in which most children are in bed by then. Personally I have never watched nor cared about the show.

If people strongly feel about what is being shown on cable TV, you have the right to cancel your subscription.

I used to love this show, I thought it was the best thing on tv. But I cannot watch it in good conscience anymore… I have trouble dealing with some sexual sins, and I realised this show is an occasion of sin. And no matter how much I tried to make excuses and watch it, I just couldn’t. So I haven’t watched a single episode this season, and from what I hear, this show takes it one step further every episode.

They are trying so hard to push the envelope even further each year, and there seems to be a threesome in every episode. I really don’t think any kind of petitions will stop this show. Nip/Tuck is FX’s highest rated show ever, and nothing will get FX to cancel it unless all the sponsors pull out, but I doubt that will happen since a lot are just alcohol commercials.

I actually read somewhere that mothers were upset because they had comercials running for this show during “Space Jam”, while their kids were watching it. And in some parts of the US, I remember reading that it sometimes airs as early as 7pm.
