Today I saw a statement from a pro-abortion person who said discussing fetal development was “triggering” to women who had abortions. Therefore other people need to be careful about what they say. Even if they are discussing wanted children and have no idea that someone else hearing the conversation has had an abortion in the past.

This is such a dilemma for some (I hope extreme) people that they aren’t comfortable using “baby” to describe the unborn child, even when the mother does. That’s not compatible with political sensitivities and it might hurt someone’s feelings. Especially in the case of late-term abortions of healthy babies.

This really seems like political correctness gone off the deep end. What happens when a mother wants to describe her healthy pregnancy? Avoid the topic b/c maybe some other person listening has had an abortion and might feel bad?

Yes, this sounds somewhat over the top.

Personally, whenever I hear a homily or a talk or a Gospel reading that mentions hell, it triggers anxiety for me. But maybe priests have got the message, since I seldom hear those types of triggering talks.

That’s an interesting point.

I suppose the more worrisome point is that if priests avoid talk of hell, it might make it easier for me and others to end up there. And if people in general avoid talking about the unborn baby in the womb, it might make it easier to ignore the humanity of that unborn child, and thus make abortion more likely.

Huh…I wish we could ask the pro-abortion person who wrote that statement why they think people need to be careful about what they say? What is it about an abortion that would “trigger” a woman who had one?

Isn’t it just a medical procedure, after all?

Now I’m confused, too.

sorry this is long

I don’t want to give too many details b/c this was nauseating and I don’t want to link to it. It was a comment on an article in which a woman aborted a healthy 20+ week fetus. One more week and I think the abortion would have been illegal all over the country.

There were a lot of comments on this article to the effect of, I’m pro-choice but I don’t support this particular choice, or I do support a woman’s choice but this is disgusting.

Then there were militants writing in the comments that said that anyone who had any reservations at all about any woman’s choice at any time were not actually pro-choice. And certain things just could/should not be stated online. For example, a couple people said adoption would have been better. They got told they were mean, nasty people who should never have said what they said online b/c it would hurt the author’s feelings.

So anyone who talked about fetal development at that stage was given a really hard time. Then someone mentioned a situation where a woman in all innocence talked about a pregnancy and how developed the fetus was at that stage. Another woman got “triggered” b/c she’d had an abortion. The first woman didn’t know that. The woman who had the abortion “forgave” the woman who mentioned the pregnancy, but their friendship was never the same.

I don’t know how to present these things. This is long and I’m not interested in condemning post-abortive women. However it made me sick to read that extremists consider it wrong to oppose any abortion at all at any time. And they think it’s not just wrong, they will blame and try to censor people who express any type of hesitation about any choice, no matter how extreme.

Yea, it kind of undermines their whole argument that abortion is no big deal with no lasting psychological affects on women.

OP- you need to copy that statement- then point out to the person posting it that you’re in agreement that abortions are very traumatic with life long impacts on women, we need to work on getting the word out to prevent them from choosing abortion.

Great idea, thanks.

Women who get abortions deserve to have their feelings hurt with triggers. What they did was bad and they should feel bad.
