Taxpayer-funded study recommends repealing law that bans polygamy in Canada

OTTAWA (CP) - A new study for the federal Justice Department says Canada should get rid of its law banning polygamy, and change other legislation to help women and children living in such multiple-spouse relationships.

“Criminalization does not address the harms associated with valid foreign polygamous marriages and plural unions, in particular the harms to women,” says the report, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act. “The report therefore recommends that this provision be repealed.”

Instead, Canadian laws should be changed to better accommodate the problems of women in polygamous marriages, providing them clearer spousal support and inheritance rights.

When the liberals called for gay marriage they told us that the slippery slope argument was invalid because no one was calling for the legalization of polygamy.

I guess they hadn’t heard about Bountiful, BC.

Now our tax dollars have gone into this nonsense. Legalize polygamy to protect women.

All of you Americans out there heed this. When the gay marriage lobbyists decry the slippery slope argument, just point north. Remind them that the Mormon church has never rescinded the doctrine of plural marriage, only suspended the practise. If homosexual marriage is legalized, there will be those who want to push it to the next step. Once the definition of marriage is opened for one group, others will demand that it be changed again to include them.

It might be too late to win this fight in Canada, but it’s not in the US.

Secondly, i agree that it is insane to argue that legalized polygamy would protect women. It clearly trivializes them. Here in the US, i’m sure some forward thinking women would surely also have a harem of men, too, which is equally demeaning. The psychology behind the selfishness of thinking it just takes multiple people to satisfy you is awful. It reminds me of that guy in Ben-Hur who told Judah he had many wives because he was generous.
Anyway, when polygamy is part of the problem, how is legalizing it going to help these women? By perpetuating the lifestyle that enables their abusers? Awesome! Some woman in Israel just married a dolphin. The first threesome in the Netherlands just got wedded the other month. It’s insanity. No slippery slope indeed. The world is nuts and the walls are closing in. The best thing we can do is keep living our faith, especially when we start dying for it, which i think will probably happen en masse within our lifetimes.
