My son’s CCD class still needs a teacher, but I don’t know how much time it would take, if I volunteer. Since this is Reconciliation and First Communion prep year, I am afraid of taking on more than I have time for. Can anyone provide an estimate of how much weekly prep time is realistic, to do a decent job? Thanks!

I have taught second grade and Sacrament prep but there is no easy answer. Our DRE told the teachers to plan at least an hour of prep for each hour of class. But that presumes that you are already familiar with Church teaching. If you have to stop and do all of the supplemental readings, it will take you longer. 😃

At our parish, the second grade teacher is also responsible for the parent meetings, the interviews for readiness and the activity day prior to First Communion (it’s like a day retreat for second graders). I know other parishes where the DRE does most of this and the teacher just handles classroom duties. Can you speak to last year’s teacher to get the inside scoop?

Just to be the teacher (none of that scheduling stuff, etc.) I’d say 1 hour of prep would be enough for second grade. You already know a ton more than the kids.

You might have a look at the textbook, that’d tell you quick whether you’re up to teaching the content.
