So, my three year old daughter asked me at dinner tonight, “Daddy, what is the Holy Spirit?”

I had no idea how to explain it to her. She ‘gets’ God, and she ‘gets’ Jesus, but I ended up saying, “Well, the Holy Spirit is sort of like Casper…er…I mean, like the wind…er…well, see, he’s God’s friend…umm…”

It was a train wreck. Any suggestions?

Well, I would say that the Holy Spirit is a special helper Jesus sent for us. After He died and rose from the dead, all of his followers were lonley and missed Jesus very much. So, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to guide us in our every day lives.

At age three, you’ll do well to help her just become more familiar with the truth of the Holy Spirit’s existence and the ways the H.S. is described “dove, wind, fire”. Those images will stick in her mind! Here’s an article too: domestic-church.com/CONTENT.DCC/19990901/ARTICLES/holyspirit.htm

For my kiddos, I usually say that the Holy Spirit is our special Friend, Who came to be with us every day after Jesus went back up to Heaven.

Good luck! 🙂
