ok i’m not asking how to teach or what to teach, but what i’m asking is how should a teacher get his/her students to listen without using punishment? i know that teachers can get their students to listen better without making them write sentences. what method does a teacher use to get his/her students to listen, pay attention, ect.

I’m guessing these are youngish people? I know it helps to be active, move around, don’t stand there being monotone. Don’t just lecture, this is boring. Give them stuff to do to participate. Be confident. It is deadly if you are not. Be prepared, don’t find yourself shuffling through papers going Uh…Umm. Otherwise, I know there are several teachers around here…they’ll speak up soon, I’m sure.
 
actually they are young teens. i’m not the actuall teacher, but i need to know what the correct method would be. thanks for the reply though
 
one of the best history teachers I ever knew back in Cleveland came to class dressed and in character as a different historical figure, not every day, but quite often. she never told you who she was supposed to be, you had to figure it out. Maybe I will start dressing like a different saint each week.
 
For every hour of class spend a hour with the Blessed Sacrament. Pass on the graces you have recieved to your students. God will not be out given, you will recieve the graces necessary to pass along to the class. It is through this grace that we teach.
 
That’d be an awful lot of time spent in Adoration. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from doing it, but I can’t imagine it’d be practicle for most people.

The best situation is to seperate the boys and girls. Boys and girls behave differently. Boys tend to have more energy while girls are better at sitting calmly. It’s no wonder that there are far more boys being drugged supposedly for ADD/ADHD than girls.

It is worth it and practicle because it gets results…
 
How do you get kids to listen and learn?

It is very important to start the year out with expectation, rules and consequences. The rules should be very clear. Examples should be given of the different rules. How the rules can be broken. While explaining the rule that is being broke a consequence can be mentioned. Everything should be explained clearly and plainly but not take too much time of the class. Use the first day or two to break in the rules by letting kids discover first hand the rule they broke and the consequence they would get. Once the training period is over be very consistent! Kids notice when a teacher favors students. Each teacher has their own threshold of tolerance so the teacher may catch every infraction or a teacher may let a few slide. When things seem to be getting out of control the teacher can take the time to review the rules at the beginning of each class until the class settles back down.

When kids know the clear expectations of the teacher, the class runs smoothly. The teacher can teach and the students will listen.

All of this is done with a kind heart. Discipline is done quickly without a fuss so that teaching can continue. The teacher should be positive and helpful. The teacher should not loose their cool. If they do, the kids won. The teacher should also develop a relationship with the kids and not be afraid to let the lesson go at times so that something important to the kids can be discussed. We are after all teaching the child not the curriculum.

i guess that kinda helped, but lets say some kids are being noisy and goofing off alittle, would a teacher give them a warning for a punishment or is there a better more merciful way for a teacher to get his students to listen? making the kids do something out of fear of a consequence or punishment just doesnt seem right to me. is there another way?

One way is to engage the students who are goofing off in the class. That can be by question and answer: by presentation; by having them read a section of the text out loud to the class, etc.

Some times the issue is how they are goofing off. If they always sit next to a certain student, and the two get going, or one prods the other on, spearate them. If one is always distracting others, isolate them (they sit by you).

Go back and think how your teachers taught; especially the effective ones. Talk to teachers. ask for specific help; not vague, general questions, but “what do I do in this circumstance?”.

There is no one magic answer; each child is unique, and while generalities apply, they only apply some/much/most of the time.

Punishment is such a distasteful word. Why not call it “consequences” or in the case of my classroom–“discipline.”

It’s ok to discipline children…because then you are turning them into disciples. 😃
 
well a teacher doesnt want to do 2 things, they
  1. dont want to get their students angry with them
    and
  2. they dont want to use “fear” to get kids to do things, for example you dont want to get them to listen by using their fear of writing sentences, am i right? but if its wrong to do these things, then how else can you teach them to listen?
