I teach an advanced placement course for which students take a national standardized test at the end of the year. A few years ago, a student told me about type of problem that was on the exam after taking it, even though disclosure of test contents was prohibited. I then realized that the concept underlying this problem is a required component of the curriculum that I was supposed to cover. When it comes time to cover it again this year, I cannot be sure I would have thought to teach it were it not for the forbidden comment made a few years ago. There have been subsequent “legitimate” ways that I have been made aware of this concept (such as practice tests), but I may very well not have taught it from this information alone. Would it be cheating to expose the current class to this information?
