I’m of no help on this, my grandparents were 1st generation German and I have had beer with meals since I was 5 years old and was drinking a sweet hoppy concoction called kinder beir even before that. The funny part is that my grandparents were always disgusted by people who were drunk and I never saw either of them drink to excess in my lifetime. By the time I reached H.S. and kids were drinking I was kind of like: “What’s the big deal? This is boring and the fact you are drunk and throwing up on yourself only tells me you don’t know how to do this.”
In college, my friends and I drank A LOT of beer in the course of a night but it was so much different than how I see people drink today. Here was our Friday:
4 p.m. — bar for happy hour and have two beers
5 p.m. — back to the dorm for dinner, watch a little T.V. maybe even have a nap do a little homework
7 p.m. — at the bar, order pitcher, and split it among six or seven guys, talk, watch sports, play cards, repeat
9 p.m. — get some appetizers, more beer, talk, laugh, etc.
2 a.m. go home
By the end of night we’d probably had 7-10 pitchers of beer…maybe as many as 12. A lot of beer but spread out over a time frame. We did not drive. We walked back to our dorms, a little pie eyed and with goofy grins. Were we drunk. Yes. No doubt. But we were not falling down, call the cops drunk. Anyone who drank enough to be sick was not looked upon favorably. Do it more than once and it was “dude. Maybe you should find something else to do.” And, if you decided you didn’t want to drink anything but ice water of diet Coke. Cool. Not a problem. (I now call this the old style or traditional European pub style of drinking)
Now, I am seeing college students who don’t start drinking until 11 p.m. and pound vodka and red bull or other such things, pounding down as much as they can as fast as they can and then get sick on themselves, pass out in yards, etc. (The modern American style of drinking) and I simply don’t get it.
This is pretty much how I feel about beer now, I think because of our up bringing my friends and I learned how to enjoy beer at am much earlier age than kids today. The clip below explains what I mean.
