Teen Poverty in America

I just spent several hours observing teenagers hanging out at our local mall. We came to the conclusion many teenagers in America today are living in poverty. Most young men we observed didn’t even own a belt; there was not one among the whole group.

But that wasn’t the sad part. Many were wearing their daddy’s jeans. Some jeans were so big and baggy they hung low on their hips, exposing their underwear. I know some must have been ashamed their daddy was short, because his jeans hardly went below their knees. They weren’t even their daddies’ good jeans, for most had holes ripped in the knees and a dirty look to them.

It grieved me, in a modern, affluent society like America, there are those who can’t afford a decent pair of jeans. I was thinking about asking my church to start a jeans drive for “poor kids at the mall.” Then on Christmas Eve, we could go Christmas caroling and distribute jeans to these poor teenagers.

But here is the saddest part…it was the girls they were hanging out with that disturbed us most. Never, in all of my life, have I seen such poverty-stricken girls. These girls had the opposite problem of the guys. They all had to wear their little sister’s clothes. Their jeans were about 5 sizes too small! I don’t know how they could get them on, let alone button them up. Their jeans barely went over their hipbones. Most also had on their little sister’s top; it hardly covered their midsections. Oh, they were trying to hold their heads up with pride, but it was a sad sight to see these almost grown women wearing children’s clothes.

However, it was their underwear that bothered us most. They, like the boys, because of the improper fitting of their clothes, they had their underwear exposed. We had never seen anything like it. It looked like their underwear was only held together by a single piece of string. We know it saddens your heart to receive this report on condition of our American teenagers. While we go to bed every night with a closets full of clothes nearby, there are millions of “mall girls” who barely have enough material to keep it together.

We think their “poorness” is why these 2 groups gather at the mall; boys with their short daddies! ’ ripped jeans, and girls wearing their younger sisters’ clothes. The mall is one place where they can find acceptance. So, next time you are at the mall, doing your shopping , and you pass by some of these poor teenagers, would you say a prayer for them?

And one more thing … Will you pray the guys’ pants won’t fall down, and the girls’ strings won’t break?

We thank you all,

Concerned Grandfather

Too true. I can’t wait until the fashions go back to something more traditional and classic again. For now, we dress like fuddy-duddies, but I don’t care. Maybe seeing us dressed in clothes that fit will get people moreused to them, and less likely to reject them wholesale.

:rotfl: I LOVE IT!!!

What a great email…and what a great way to sum up the fashion statements being made today!

I was listening to his monologue while doing some errands at lunch. When he said “poorness”, I thought he said “porness” (which also could be true  )

I don’t understand the idea of really baggy clothes- jeans, shirts, sweatshirts, jackets etc.

I’m glad they’re covered up, they certainly are not immodest, but why do they want to look so shapeless? You can hardly tell they have a body underneath.

These types of fashion styles are fashioned after prison garb…sad that the youth of today wants to be like a person in JAIL…

What I’m seeing are normal clothes but the kids buy them in huge sizes. Normal coats that are way too big, normal jeans that are way too big, etc.

I’m glad they’re not skin tight, but now they’re falling off! —KCT

Because they are teenagers, and teenagers were outfits that make adults go  .

Teenagers don’t want to look like fine upstanding citizens, they want to look like rebellious anti-social youths.

I did it. Pants so tight I needed a shoe lace through the zipper pull to yank it up. And shirts that showed my mid drift. (Ahh- the days when I had a mid drift I could show.) Black everything and a dog chain around my neck. I grew out of it, most will -life goes on.

THis what I was describing, over sized clothing is what I was talking about

just dropped my daugher off at college, where she is doing graduate work (I get to babysit), coming out of classroom bldg. is a staircase facing a brick railing where everyone sits, back facing the stairs. It is called the “butt wall” because that is all you see and as you get to the top of the stairs the butts, bare except for the thongs, are at eye level. Totally disgusting. I want a national referendum banning bare butts in public, thank you very much.

Hopefully parents will buy their kids clothes which fit this Christmas.

Me, too. Then my eyes and brain would have been spared the sight of a grown man’s “plumber crack”- at the optometrist’s office, of all places. Apparently some adult men can’t afford belts either. If I was that hairy I’d make sure I at least tied my pants up with a piece of string. 😛

Why make a deal out of a teenagers baggy clothes? At least they’re not walking around in the nude. 😛
“Fashion statements” are part of a teen’s life, it’s only a phase. :B

captaincatholic: I doubt people will dress traditional/classic again, at least not all the time. O_o And lots of teen boys are wearing clothes that fit… except they get their pants from the girl’s juniors section (then they start acting like girls), hahaha!

I wish the girls would adopt some baggy fashions to cover up their bare bellies and breasts.

I wish my breasts weren’t the size of doorknobs. 😦 But 'ey I can pass off looking younger than I actually am, w00t!

Maybe with all of the butts showing, they are studying to be plumbers?

Heard a story that plumbers do this on purpose to gross people out so that they won’t be bothered and hovered over while they work. I worked for me (being grossed out, that is). One siting, and I left them in the basement by themselves for hours. Almost gave them the key to the house, so I could get away. 😛

I handed out copies of this to teens at our local mall and at first they looked at me kind of strange but then most would say they agree with it and liked it.
