Televangelist Robertson warns town of God’s wrath

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Conservative Christian televangelist Pat Robertson told citizens of a Pennsylvania town that they had rejected God by voting their school board out of office for supporting “intelligent design” and warned them on Thursday not to be surprised if disaster struck.

Robertson, a former Republican presidential candidate and founder of the influential conservative Christian Broadcasting Network and Christian Coalition, has a long record of similar apocalyptic warnings and provocative statements.

“I’d like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don’t turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city,” Robertson said on his daily television show broadcast from Virginia, “The 700 Club.”

“And don’t wonder why He hasn’t helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I’m not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that’s the case, don’t ask for His help because he might not be there,” he said."

I like that the Reuters headline refers to him as a televangelist. What would be better? charlatan? soothsayer?

Nut?

The folks in Dover, PA are nuts, more like.

Long-term conditioning (from school and the media) can indeed bias our perception of reality. We have been told for so long that we descended from a common ancestor with the apes that we naturally assume that chimpanzees are more like us than any other animal. This bias influences our expectations in scientific studies.

That’s why there are so many “surprising results” in current DNA research. For example, much has been made of the high similarities between human and chimpanzee DNA. We have heard of a widely publicized study claiming that the similarity between human and chimpanzee DNA is 98%. Scientists have also recently claimed that “just 2.5% of DNA is different between people and mice.” So, we are almost as closely related to mice as we are to monkeys! Furthermore, we are also consistently told a chimpanzees’ DNA is more similar to ours than it is to a gorilla or any of the other apes.

The only reason results are surprising is because they aren’t what they were expected to be. The expectations come from logical conclusions based on the theory of evolution. Since the theory of evolution is wrong, the conclusions are wrong, and the results are “surprising.”

Maybe they are listening to the Vatican and not to Pat Robertson.

** Vatican: Faithful Should Listen to Science **

A Vatican cardinal said Thursday the faithful should listen to what secular modern science has to offer, warning that religion risks turning into “fundamentalism” if it ignores scientific reason.

“But we also know the dangers of a religion that severs its links with reason and becomes prey to fundamentalism,” he said.

… Poupard and others at the news conference were asked about the religion-science debate raging in the United States over evolution and “intelligent design.”

Monsignor Gianfranco Basti, director of the Vatican project STOQ, or Science, Theology and Ontological Quest, reaffirmed John Paul’s 1996 statement that evolution was “more than just a hypothesis.”

“A hypothesis asks whether something is true or false,” he said. “(Evolution) is more than a hypothesis because there is proof.”

Poupard, for his part, stressed that what was important was that “the universe wasn’t made by itself, but has a creator.” But he added, “It’s important for the faithful to know how science views things to understand better.”

Intelligent design must be one of your passions. I love what you have written. It is clear and concise and logical. I to am a believer in Intelligent design. I was never able to understand Darwin’s theory of evolution. It made no sense to me so I somehow blend it with the biblical story of creation. The Creation story in the bible didn’t make sense because of the time line. But to me Intelligent design with it’s evolution within the species makes perfect sense to me it is only logical.

wrong forum?
I don’t think so. When Mr. Robertson called for the elimination of the Venezuelan president it was posted in this forum. However, at the rate he’s going, he may need his own forum.

anti-evolution people scream about evolution being wrong because we cant be descended from monkeys. actually they are 100% right. monkeys and humans share a COMMON ANCESTOR. we no more came from monkeys than dophins came from horses.

i dont think alot of people dont actually understand evolution. evolution DESCRIBES a process, pure and simple.

the process really is little errors creeping into DNA replication of a species. eventually, when one or more errors cause a gene to produce a different protein, or a gene is deleted, or a gene is duplicated, that is when changes have a HIGHER probability of taking place. and IF some sort of mutation occurs that creates an ADVANTAGE for that organism, the probability of it reproducing is higher. when enough mutations or genetic changes occur, then the host organism’s DNA/chromosomes would no longe be able to “line up” with an ancestor’s chromosomes, making it impossible for them to reproduce. hence, a new “species”.

“evolution” is a blanket term for all kinds of genetic drift that occurs between two populations of a species. a population of species X may migrate to a new environment away form population Y, thus requiring some sort of adaptations to thrive. those that dont, die off. given enough time population X and Y will no longer be able to breed together because of the adaptations caused by different requirements of the different environments. or a natural disaster or climate change can occur.

look at sharks. they have been roughly the same for about 200 million years. they have MASTERED immune function, predatory skills, tumor suppression, and a host of other things. they have had no need to change hardly at all.

now look at humans. our immune system is terrible, our cancer suppression mechanisms are almost non-existant, and our enzymes have such a narrow working range that it is embarassing. observe how frequently humans migrated and changed environments over history.

while sharks were perfecting their physiology, humans had to spend thousands and thousands of years playing catch-up with the new environments they chose. add in a very complex brain where sodium/potassium pumps requires 40% of expendable energy just for the electrical currents to function, and youve tied up many, many genes in the maintenence and construction of our brain that otherwise could have been devoted for other purposes.

the evidence is all around us, but many, many people choose not to take the time to do a broad and intensive study of the statistics and physiology. but they scream “it CANT happen!!!”

Yes, Robertson is a nut, a loony.

Sadly, he’s not remotely alone.

He’s given way too much credibility in our country. What gets me about Mr. Robertson is that the media uses him as a go to guy. Whenever there is some story concerning faith or religion, they go to him for serious comment. Yet he has made so many outrageous remarks like praying for openings on the Supreme Court (did he want someone to die?), saying we deserved 9/11, calling for the elimination of the Venezuelan president, etc.

You can bet if there were a terrible fire or flood in Dover, he’d use religion as a wedge. And yet, the media gives this guy credibility because they ask him about serious issues rather than asking him about people selling tattoos on their heads on ebay.

I find it embarrassing that Pat Robertson considers himself to be a God-fearing, Christian. His interpretation of how God reacts to human beings is appalling, to say the least!

Is God REALLY as petty and small minded as Pat Robertson seemed to imply?

That’s exactly why they go to him. He is prone to saying idiotic things and when he does, the media can use it to paint all Christians in the light of lunacy.

I agree! He furthers their agenda.

Exactly, Tim. He makes for Good Scandal-Mongering Television.
As for the truth or for inspiration, nah…
However, when he called for the assassination of Chavez he scared me, I was afraid of an international incident.

It’s a sad thing to say, but whenever he gets a lot of publicity like this he ends up making Christianity look foolish. No wonder they love him.

This is because it’s easier for the media people if they can single out religious people as “that lone nut over there”. 😉

I sometimes have wondered whether Robertson is truly a believer in Christ as he claims or whether he is just trying to get his name in the papers.

He seems to enjoy calling down the wrath of God on people that he disagrees with, he likes the idea that the town might be trouble.
That seems unkind to me, and not unkind to instruct but to punish.

I am in agreement with you. I am neither Catholic or Christian, but I do believe God works through evolution.
